The School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts offers a dynamic range of production-related courses in performing and entertainment arts. From theatre to theme parks and live events, the School’s professionally focused programmes are designed to prepare students for exciting careers in entertainment and the cultural industries. In addition to its MFA, BFA, Diploma and Certificate Programmes in Set and Costume Design, Costume Technology, Property Making, Scenic Art, Lighting Design and Technology, Sound Design and Technology, Music Production, Stage & Event Management and Technical Direction; recognising today’s and tomorrow’s needs for top production crew by local and regional entertainment companies, the School also offers fast-track intensive courses.

The Dean is expected to lead the development and implementation of the overall vision and academic development of the School, working closely with senior staff to promote innovative developments in the delivery of performing arts education, with a particular focus on the Academy’s unique strengths, including its location in a dynamic and diverse cultural metropolis, and its focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and original creativity.  The Dean will also play an important role in the development of local, regional and international partnerships, building upon existing strengths and developing new areas that support the overall growth and positioning of the School.

Subject to negotiation, the preferred commencement date is Spring 2024 (tentative).

The Person

The successful candidate should have a track record as a leading expert in the field of theatre/screen specialising in some of the following areas:

•     Live entertainment and production arts

•     Media design and technology for theatre/screen

•     Production design for theatre/screen

•     Theatre/Screen production and management

Other attributes:

(a)    Strong academic background, preferably with knowledge of practice-as-research

(b)    Strong track record of teaching and scholarly achievement

(c)    Significant evidence of academic, artistic and administrative accomplishments

(d)    A successful track record of leadership within an educational institution or similar performing arts based organisation, including evidence of innovative approaches to programme management and development

(e)    Solid knowledge of trends and developments in performing arts education, as well as an in-depth understanding of its role within a performing arts and conservatoire context

(f)     A strong vision for the School and its future development

(g)    High level interpersonal and communication skills

(h)    Evidence of successful outcomes in building productive partnerships among tertiary institutions, industry, and community groups

(i)     A willingness and enthusiasm to embrace, lead and manage change


Appointment will be made on a four-year renewable contract with 15% end of contract gratuity. Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits. Housing subsidy will be provided to the eligible appointee.  The current standard rate of income tax in Hong Kong is 15%.
