Deep Springs College seeks applications for Visiting Faculty Appointments in the 2024-2025 academic year
About Deep Springs:
At Deep Springs College, democracy and polity are more than just buzzwords in the classroom; they are a vital component of what defines the institution. The college’s 26 students participate in intensive self-government and lead committees that hire faculty and admit students. Isolated on cattle ranch in Eastern California near the Sierra Nevada mountains, the college aims to prepare students for a life of service to humanity through its three pillars— labor, student body self-governance, and a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. All students receive a full scholarship during their two years of study. Afterwards, most students transfer to top-tier institutions in order to complete their undergraduate degree.
The faculty of the college is composed of three long-term professors, and two to four visiting professors per term. The student faculty ratio is 4-1, and most classes have fewer than 10 students. Faculty members have an active role in shaping the intellectual culture of this small community, and conversations that begin in class often continue over meals. Each year Deep Springs seeks scholars and artists who are qualified teachers, from graduate students to professors emeriti/ae, for visiting professor positions.
During our two standard semesters, September-December and January-April, we have two or three visiting scholars and artists teaching at Deep Springs. Visiting professors teach one class, usually in their specialty or discipline, with the possibility of Independent Studies if they so choose. Deep Springs seeks visiting professors in liberal arts disciplines to teach one class as a visitor in the Fall Semester 2024 (September – December), Winter Semester 2025 (January – April), or Interim Summer Term 2025 (May – June).
Applications are especially encouraged from candidates who complement the areas of expertise of our current long term faculty, including the following disciplines:
Natural Sciences (Geology, Energy and the Environment, Cognitive Science/Psychology, Chemistry)
Social Sciences (Economics, History, Media & Politics, Sociology, Urban Planning/Design, Black Studies, Feminism/Women and Gender Studies, American Studies)
Humanities (Literature, Religious Studies, Law/Politics, Visual and Performing Arts, Linguistics)
We ask applicants to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and statement of teaching philosophy. If selected for a phone interview, we may also request contact information for 3 references and arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be sent to the Curriculum Committee via email or mail. The link to the application can be found here. Applications for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semester appointments will close on December 15th, 2023. Applications for Summer 2025 will close on March 1, 2024.
