The University of Iowa, College of Public Health invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH).


The Positions Each position is a full-time, 12-month appointment to start around August 1, 2024.


Candidates will be considered across a broad range of environmental or occupational health expertise, including but not limited to: environmental justice; climate change and sustainability; environmental health; big data and geospatial methods; environmental policy; exposure assessment; exposomics; industrial hygiene; ergonomics and musculoskeletal health; Total Worker Health®; risk assessment and communication; agricultural and rural health; or environmental, occupational, or injury epidemiology.


Successful candidates will contribute to our graduate and undergraduate educational programs; conduct innovative research; and provide service to their profession, the institution, and relevant communities.


Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.


  Required Qualifications

  • Hold a doctoral degree (or expected by the time of appointment) in an area related to environmental or occupational health, Conduct research aligned with public health interests (e.g., understanding the human health consequences of environmental or occupational exposures), Have publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals (rank of Associate), Demonstrate the ability to develop (rank of Assistant) or sustain (rank of Associate) an externally funded research program, Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, Have the ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations, including students, staff, and faculty.

  • Experience working in a public health academic setting.

Department of Occupational and Environmental Health The Department offers a rich environment for collaborative research. Our faculty work with colleagues in health sciences, engineering, urban planning, education, and others on campus, across the region, and globally. Twelve professors direct or participate in a variety of extramurally funded programs, including:


  • A NIEHS-funded environmental health sciences research center 
  • A NIEHS-funded superfund research program (Link)

  • A NIOSH-funded agricultural health center (Link)
  • A NIOSH-funded education and research center (Link)
  • A NIOSH-funded Total Worker Health® center (Link)

  • A state-funded agricultural safety and health center (Link)
  • Investigator-initiated research projects funded by NIH, CDC, and other agencies

The Department trains approximately 50 graduate students annually and offers several degree programs, including Master of Public Health (MPH) in OEH, Master of Science (MS) in OEH, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in OEH, MS in Agricultural Safety and Health, and MS in Industrial Hygiene (ABET-accredited thesis and non-thesis options). In addition, several of our faculty are key contributors to the University’s Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Human Toxicology (Link).
