Job Summary

Missouri Western State University’s College of Liberal Arts and the School of Fine Arts invites applications for the tenure-track Assistant Professor in Music Theory for an August 2024 appointment . The successful candidate for this position will hold a doctorate in music theory or composition.

The Assistant Professor of Music Theory will teach and coordinate the department’s music theory sequence. Teaching duties will include undergraduate music theory courses and labs, as well as courses on perspectives in music and fundamentals of music. Teaching content will cover music theory and analysis, aural skills, form analysis, contemporary techniques, and arranging. Other courses may be included, depending on the applicant’s strengths and departmental needs.

Successful candidates will:
  • Demonstrate disciplinary and professional expertise, and evidence of exceptional and innovative teaching and advising with diverse undergraduate or adult learners (in-person and online).
  • Exhibit existing and potential scholarly productivity as well as the desire to collaborate with colleagues, the region, and community.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to serve on department committees, attend department meetings, and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds.
Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in music theory or composition
  • Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate and adult learners
  • Potential for scholarship as evidenced by publications or conference presentations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in theory pedagogy, with experience teaching both fundamental music theory and aural training.
  • Demonstrably excellent full-time higher education teaching experience (at least one year beyond graduate assistant level).
  • Ability to teach applied instrumental studios not already covered by full-time faculty.

Physical Demands

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
