Assistant Professor Graphic Design


Whittier College's Art & Visual Studies department is accepting applications for a tenure-track line in Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design, beginning August, 2024. We seek a colleague with enthusiasm for developing innovative and forward-thinking curriculum for students at one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, substantial professional design experience, a strong portfolio, and an MFA in hand. In addition to covering topics such as graphic design, typography and brand identity design, the ideal candidate will be able to teach in at least one of the following fields: web design, digital illustration, motion graphics, animation. There are ample opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations across campus, and we encourage candidates who might want to partner with our colleagues from other fields. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and equity. Individuals with a history of and commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach five courses per year, will serve as an academic advisor, will serve on college-wide committees and will help the department in supporting the graphic design track.


Applicants should submit a letter of interest that addresses the following points: 1) ability to teach courses in graphic design, typography, and brand identity; 2) ability to teach courses in other areas (e.g. web design, digital illustration, motion design, etc.); 3) professional experience in design; 4) past experience in teaching to diverse learners; 5) potential contributions candidate can make to DEI in the form of teaching, service, mentorship, and/or research.
