Job Details

The Social Work Department at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Work at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin September 2024. Skidmore aims to attract an academically and culturally diverse faculty, especially those who can contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the community through their teaching, scholarship, and service. Enthusiasm for advising, teaching, and mentoring a diverse population of students is essential.

The area of expertise is open, but the program is especially interested in candidates whose scholarship and teaching interests include mental health treatment and advocacy, and/or gerontology.

The course load is 18 credits (typically four to five courses per year). Within the context of the regular teaching load, the position also occasionally includes teaching a first-year interdisciplinary seminar (topic open) and supervising students doing community service and independent research.

Candidates must have two years post-MSW practice experience, a PhD in social work/social welfare or related discipline, prior experience teaching at the college-level, as well as an active scholarship/research program.

The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to undergraduate education, familiarity with CSWE standards, as well as demonstrated teaching excellence through evidence such as teaching evaluations. The department encourages applications from experienced faculty motivated to teach in a small bachelor’s degree program within the context of a vibrant, selective liberal arts college. The successful candidate must also demonstrate an ability to teach across our CSWE-accredited program (e.g., micro and macro practice, social policy, HBSE, research) as well as courses in their area of expertise.

Required documents needed to apply

Candidates for the position must provide a cover letter describing teaching philosophy. The cover letter should explain how the candidate will contribute to institutional diversity and excellence and express the profession’s concern for social justice; it should also address plans for future research. Teaching evaluations, the names and contact information of three references, and a curriculum vitae are also required.

We encourage applications from under-represented groups as well as individuals who have experience with diverse populations; women and minoritized candidates are encouraged to apply.
