The School of Philosophy of The Catholic University of America invites applications and nominations for its next Dean. See the dean prospectus for more information.

The Catholic University of America, founded in 1887 by the U.S. Catholic bishops, is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States and is committed to being a comprehensive institution of higher learning, faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ as handed on by the Church. It is the only American university established by papal approval, and the only American university with a faculty of philosophy that awards ecclesiastical degrees.

Formally inaugurated in 1895, the School of Philosophy offers philosophical education to lay and seminary students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with over 100 undergraduate majors and nearly 80 graduate students.

The faculty of the School of Philosophy enthusiastically embrace our place within the Catholic intellectual tradition as we engage with the full range of philosophical texts and arguments.  With an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching, we enjoy an exceptionally strong spirit of collegiality, comity, and collaboration—in short, philosophical friendship.  Our enviable placement record of PhD graduates multiplies our influence throughout the Church and the academy.

The Dean of Philosophy reports directly to the Provost and is responsible for the functioning and strategic direction of the School of Philosophy.  Working closely with other administrators, faculty, staff, and students, the Dean serves as the School’s chief executive and academic leader by promoting excellence in research, teaching, and service.  The Dean upholds the School’s vision; generates resources in support of that vision; increases the School’s external visibility; manages planning, operations, admissions, and budgeting; superintends academic development and review; and oversees the hiring, promotion, and tenuring of faculty.

Applications and Nominations:  Review of application materials will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, a current curricula vitae should be forwarded to the email address below. Nominations, inquiries, and expressions of interest should be forwarded in confidence to: J. Steven Brown, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Administration at brownjs@cua.edu

The Catholic University of America is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity institution and welcomes applications from women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities.  All employees must be able to affirm and support the mission of the University in performing their duties.  Based on the religious mission of the University, the University has the prerogative to prefer applicants who can integrate religious doctrine into their work and academic disciplines, engage in teaching and scholarship from a decidedly religious perspective, and serve as advisors and mentors for student spiritual formation.
