Position Summary:

Wisconsin Occupational Safety and Health Program Research Specialist:

This position is located within the Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH) and is maintained through a contract and ongoing partnership with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's Department of Population Health Sciences (PHS). This position will work within the CDC NIOSH-funded Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance Program (OH Program), within the Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health (BEOH) in the Environmental Epidemiology and Surveillance (EES) Section.

The Wisconsin OH Program has a demonstrated record of achievement in surveillance, data analysis, and outreach to increase awareness of work related hazards. Recent expanded funding allows the program to increase its capacity to address work-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths in Wisconsin through three additional projects: 1) improved informatics (e.g., electronic case reporting and data capture); 2) occupational infectious diseases, building on COVID-19 occupational experience; and 3) occupational respiratory disease surveillance.

Under the general supervision of the EES Section Chief and the grant's Principal Investigator, this position serves as a research specialist who will work alongside two program epidemiologists, under the direction of the lead epidemiologist within the newly expanded OH program to provide surveillance and analytic capacity. The position is a member of a professional team working to plan, maintain, and evaluate activities focused on reducing the population's risk of occupational disease and exposure to workplace environmental hazards.

The research specialist will be cross-trained to handle a wide range of surveillance and analytic activities, including routine completion of descriptive statistics on existing statewide databases to identify and characterize occupational diseases in Wisconsin; working with CSTE/NIOSH and state-specific indicators; and leading complex epidemiologic analyses of multiple large datasets using SAS or R statistical software (e.g., Workers Compensation claims, Unemployment Insurance data, Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS), OSHA enforcement data, death certificate records, hospital discharge, BRFSS survey data, and adult blood lead test results) to examine and characterize occupational exposure-disease relationships. The incumbent will be responsible for epidemiologic activities related to expanded surveillance projects. These projects include the development of electronic case reporting systems for work-related conditions; the creation of systems for routine surveillance of occupationally-related infectious diseases and oversight of work-related disease outbreaks; and surveillance of occupational respiratory diseases.

The incumbent contributes to development of peer-reviewed manuscripts, surveillance reports, reports on site-specific or statewide investigations, presentations, and communications products for broader distribution via agency communications staff. This position also contributes to program funding applications and annual reports. The incumbent conducts follow-up prevention activities for high priority issues, such as adult blood lead surveillance outreach and intervention activities to ensure appropriate response to adult poisonings. This includes identifying and implementing other evidence-based interventions that reduce the incidence and severity of adverse occupational health outcomes.
