HVAC Mechanic Group IV
Primary Purpose:
The HVAC Mechanic Group IV is responsible for the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, food service, kitchen equipment and appliances. To perform skilled operation programming, maintenance and repair of direct digital, electro-mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic control equipment and systems related to building automation, especially HVAC-R systems; to prepare estimates, and plan and manage own projects within allotted budgets; and to perform related work as required.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to repair and maintain compressors, motors, pumps, blowers, refrigeration equipment, starters, VFD’s, boilers, chillers, pneumatic electronic, gas, steam, hydronic systems, and components.
- Works with specialty contractors to standardize/perform programming of computer control systems to establish or modify HVAC and other building automation.
- Analyzes and develops HVAC control strategies using thermometers, steam tables, relative humidity indicators, pressure gauges and millimeters.
- Test, troubleshoots and analyzes direct digital and pneumatic control systems related to HVAC, using a variety of specialized tools and equipment.
- Coordinates with architects, engineers, contractors, and other units in the department to complete mechanical projects.
- Inspects, repairs, and performs scheduled preventive maintenance of electrical mechanical, and pneumatic field control hardware and equipment associated with HVAC control systems.
- Responds to alarms regarding out-of-parameter HVAC conditions, takes corrective actions an notifies appropriate personnel.
- Troubleshoots and repairs problems related to air flow, air distribution, building pressurization, and air balance.
- Purchase requisitions and materials inventory for installation, maintenance, and repair projects. Purchase supplies and materials, obtain bids and correlated related cost data for HVAC service and repair proposals; make routine part purchases, account for tools and equipment, approve invoices for purchase, account for tools and equipment, approve invoices for purchases and contract work performed.
- Maintains accurate records on project and departmental work orders.
- Perform full range of preventative maintenance service on HVAC including changing filters and belts, lubrication, electrical and gas line repairs, cleaning coils and other mechanical components of systems.
- Maintains and inspects mechanical, HVAC-R and boiler systems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Responds to emergencies and implements repairs of campus buildings. Emergency, weekend shift or after hours. Over time is expected.
- Knowledge of computerized energy management systems and how to successfully manage and operate on a day-to-day basis.
- To perform skilled operation, programming, maintenance and repair of direct digital electro-mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic control equipment and systems related to building automation, especially HVAC-R systems; to prepare estimates, and plan and manage own projects within allotted budgets; and perform related work as required.
- Assist with mechanical, HVAC-R deferred maintenance needs of university buildings and makes recommendations for necessary repairs and upgrades.
- Ability to work effectively within time constraints.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, upgrades, and operations
of campus buildings Energy Management Systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Five (5) years of experience in HVAC-R and/or plumbing which includes three (3) years in a lead role
- EPA Universal Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exercise a high level of independent judgement.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of the building codes, standards and regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams and sketches.
- Ability to operate appropriate test equipment.
- Ability to read and write at an appropriate level and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to operate hand tools, power tools and necessary test equipment used in HVAC controls trade including but not limited to voltmeters, amp meters, ohmmeters, airflow meters, temperature and humidity recorders, EMS services tools, pressure testers and vacuum testers.
- Installing, calibrating, operating, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of HVAC-R and building automation related systems and equipment including direct digital, electronic, electromechanical, and pneumatic controls.
- Conducting specialized testing, analysis, and programming of building control systems.
- Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.

May require ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of the day. Ability to perform repetitive duties involving use of arms and hands, stooping, bending, and kneeling. Heavy lifting, carrying, push and pull up to 60 pounds. Possible contact with chemicals, loud noises, confined spaces, climbing ladders, ability to work on roofs. Required to use protective equipment such as a hard hat, eye guards and hearing protectors. Ability to solder, braze and weld. Manual dexterity to perform duties assigned.
Requires Asbestos Physical and Respiratory Fit Testing.
Union membership required.
Work Environment/Work Week/ Travel:Work performed both in a standard office environment and outside areas in various weather conditions, rarely but possible, working in extreme temperatures, hot, cold, wet, humid and dusty environments. Work performed during standard business hours. May work outside regular work hours to meet department’s business needs and deadlines. Must be able to work overtime, shifts and or emergency call back.
Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range: $36.90 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
