Job Description:
This position supports the Department of Classics and the Program in Modern Greek Studies by organizing a robust schedule of lectures and events, leading the department’s Communications and Outreach initiatives, and assisting the Department Manager and Department Chair with daily administration and operations.
Specific duties include staffing the main Classics office of Macfarlane House, and day-to-day operations of the department; taking the lead role in event planning of conferences, lectures, colloquia, receptions and other departmental and program activities; maintaining and creating new content for the Classics Department and the Program in Modern Greek Studies websites, email accounts, and social media accounts; providing support for courses, the undergraduate concentration, and the Couch Memorial Library; and assisting the Department Manager and Chair with duties and special projects as assigned, based on department need. This position works as the lead admin in the design and drafting of the annual Classics newsletter – The Occasional Classicist – and supervises a student editor throughout the process, while also designing and posting weekly/monthly newsletters with departmental announcements and important dates to over 1,300 contacts. The position serves the role of financial coordinator, initiating department financial business processes in Workday.
Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree with 2-3 years of related experience, or the
equivalent combination of education and work experience. Experience
in an academic environment strongly preferred.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office or Google Suite (Spreadsheets
and Word), Filemaker, Adobe Photoshop/In-design/Illustrator, and
website management and video editing programs. Comfortable working
in a PC and Mac environment helpful.
- Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal
skills.
- Ability to think and act independently, and handle competing
priorities.
- Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve and
prioritize.
- Great attention to detail and proofreading; the ability to work
independently.
- Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse
perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
