The Senior Assistant Director of Career Exploration is a member of the Career Coaching team and reports to the Director of the Center for Career Excellence. The Senior Assistant Director of Career Exploration works with Career Excellence colleagues, academic departments, and key University partners to implement the Center’s career exploration and purpose driven education strategy through signature career programming, one-on-one and small-group career coaching, and newly designed diversity career programs. This individual will manage the Center’s student intern program and supervise the intern staff.

Coaching

  • Maintain career coaching load of one-on-one and small-group appointments with students of all career interests, majors, and class years; help students build individualized career plans.
  • Advise students through stages of career exploration process; use knowledge of industries and trends to assist students with internship, job, graduate school search.

Programming

  • Manage coordination of year-long professional mentoring program for students; collaborate with colleague coordinating alumni piece to make appropriate mentor matches.
  • Lead Center’s diversity career program initiatives: create programs and identify resources for students from underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and non-US backgrounds.
  • Work with faculty and partners to strategize programs supporting students’ skill development and articulation of competencies.

Supervisory

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise 7-10 undergraduate interns for the Center for Career Excellence each academic year; maintain appropriate staffing each semester.
  • Develop comprehensive and ongoing training that provides professional and personal growth.

Internal & External Relations

  • Engage volunteers to assist students in the career exploration and preparation process.
  • Work with assigned campus areas and academic departments.
  • Help staff SLU Connect career exploration and networking trips to various cities.
  • Other duties as assigned or requested to meet departmental goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years of experience in a student-facing higher education setting. Experience in career development/collegiate career services a plus.

  • Strong interest in working in college career services at a liberal arts institution.
  • A commitment to and experience with diversity and inclusion work.
  • Ability to be innovative while providing developmentally appropriate career preparation.
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, program development/management, communication, time management skills.
  • Ability to infuse skill development into programs to increase students’ career readiness.
  • Experience supervising students or other direct reports.
  • Ability to maintain highest level of professionalism and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrated competency to assess and prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Aptitude for making decisions using independent discretion and judgment.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining relationships with a wide range of constituents.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel; Zoom.
  • Ability to travel and work non-standards hours, including some nights and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using or familiarity with: Handshake, PeopleGrove, Vault, LinkedIn Learning, LinkedIn, Qualtrics.
  • Familiarity with the NACE Career Competencies.
  • Familiarity with mentorship or mentoring programs.
  • Knowledge of the purpose mindset a plus.
