Assistant or Associate Professor - Livestock-Poultry Health and Disease

Position Function:

This is a 9-month, tenure-track position in which the successful candidate will develop an independent, integrated research program with an approach focused in animal disease (with an emphasis on understanding the linkages between animal health, disease, production and the environment, and delivery of sustainable food animal products using data science and/or predictive tools). There is an expectation the candidate will collaborate with Animal and Dairy Sciences and Poultry Science as well as other Departments/Units on campus (e.g., College of Veterinary Medicine, etc.). This is an appointment with an anticipated 60% research and 40% teaching and/or service appointment depending on the candidate’s qualifications. This position will be on main campus and ideally work jointly between the Departments of Animal and Dairy Sciences and Poultry Sciences with tenure being housed in the most appropriate unit depending on the successful candidate’s discipline, expertise, animal research model(s), and/or preference.

Department Profile:

The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences’ teaching, research, extension and service programs are supported by state‐of‐the art laboratories, equipment and trained personnel. The department is housed in a new Animal and Dairy Sciences building on campus which is adjacent to the Leveck Animal Research Center, an 1100-acre facility with livestock units and the MSU Meat Science and Muscle Biology Laboratory is adjacent to the Animal and Dairy Sciences building. In addition, the Bearden Dairy Research Center is located within 12 miles of campus. More information is available at the departmental website at https://www.ads.msstate.edu/ .

The Department of Poultry Science Department is one of six stand-alone poultry science departments in the country and is housed in a new state of the art building accompanied by a 12-acre research farm adjacent to the main campus. Facilities include a hatchery, layer facility, numerous broiler research houses, a BSL 2 live bird research facility, and a processing plant. Two commercial houses are located nearby. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties will include the development of a nationally and internationally recognized research program focused on Livestock-Poultry Health and Disease. The successful candidate will coordinate a collaborative, multidisciplinary and cross-sector approach to issues that could address current and future risks originating at the interface of humans, food animals and their environment. Thematic areas of research may include zoonotic diseases, public health, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and vector-borne infections. The selected candidate may also engage in service appropriate to their expertise which may include being a liaison to animal health and production operations of MAFES resident herds.
This position will be based in Starkville, MS, but may require occasional travel to other MSU and partner locations as needed. The successful candidate will work cooperatively with faculty and staff based in the Research and Extension Centers as well as other MSU locations. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with relevant stakeholders to address needs and with extension personnel to disseminate results. Supervision of employees and/or undergraduate and graduate students will be expected.
The successful candidate will be expected to pursue and procure extramural funding in support of their research program. Research results will be communicated via stakeholder and end-user meetings, MAFES bulletins, refereed journal articles, and other publications as appropriate. Service to relevant professional organizations and Mississippi State University is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in animal science, dairy science, poultry science or closely related field, or DVM with research experience, and with a working knowledge of livestock and/or poultry production (with an emphasis on understanding the linkages
between animal health, disease, production and the environment, and delivery of sustainable food animal products using data science and/or predictive tools). Acceptable candidates must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate research results in a variety of publications; statistical, experimental design, and analysis expertise; ability to work independently or as part of a team; and experience with data collection in the preferred candidate’s specialization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those with demonstrated success in pursuit of extramural funding, record of refereed journal publication, evidence of cross discipline collaborations, experience working with stakeholder and end-user groups.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The individual should be self-motivated, fit well in a multidisciplinary team environment, and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to publish in the peer-reviewed literature and evidence of grantsmanship.
