Offshore Wind Fisheries and Oceanographic Technician (Temporary)



Department: Biology

Position Summary:
Monmouth University is seeking applications for an Offshore Wind Oceanographic technician in the Biology department, which is part of the School of Science. This is a grant-funded position for up to two years (2023 - 2025) through a contract with Monmouth University for fisheries monitoring related to offshore wind development off the New Jersey coast. The incumbent will work as part of a growing team within the research labs of Dunton and Adolf at Monmouth University, working on acoustic telemetry and eDNA monitoring of various offshore wind development areas.

The incumbent will assist staff in a variety of tasks in assessing marine fish communities using acoustic telemetry and eDNA as a monitoring tool in offshore wind areas. The technician will assist in sampling water and fish offshore as well as prepare and maintain a variety of sampling equipment. The incumbent should be comfortable working on various sized vessels and working offshore conditions.

This is an in-person on campus, non-remote position.

Bachelor's degree

Required Skills or Software:
Must be able to utilize a variety of computer software programs in order to successfully complete assigned tasks

Required Years of Experience:

Other Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, marine biology, marine science, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Experience with sampling and field work in Marine Science or related field.
  • Comfortable working at-sea on various sized vessels (small crafts to commercial fishing vessels) in a wide variety of environmental conditions .
  • Experience conducting field work.
  • Experience working on boats.
  • Routinely lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to have a flexible schedule and potentially work early mornings, nights, weekends, and long days during sampling seasons.






Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using a variety of techniques to sample fishes including but not limited to gillnetting, trawl, long-line, pots/traps, rod-reel.
  • Experience water sampling.
  • Ability to operate small boats independently.
  • Ability to generate or assist in peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentations from collected data.
