Job Description
The Literacy Specialist will work with the TAMIU LBV Literacy Partnership program to provide tutor coaching, training, and other program support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Train and coach literacy tutors in the design and implementation of individualized lessons.
- Coach classroom teachers in practices consistent with balanced literacy and district priorities.
- Collaborate with other TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership staff to guide the overall development & implementation of the project. Providing insight into tutor and school needs; assist in curriculum development.
- Provide occasional support to other Literacy Partnership activities such as teacher professional development (face-to-face and hybrid delivery), data collection, and community engagement.
- Maintain United ISD, Laredo ISD, and other partner organization clearances (background and TB clearances).
- Maintain the confidentiality of FERPA-protected, research regulation-protected, and other sensitive information or documents.
- Have reliable transportation around the Laredo area. Essential
duties include mid-day travel.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors degree in elementary education or a closely related field of study
- 3+ years of recent elementary education experience
- Commitment to balanced literacy consistent with Guided Reading and the work of Fountas & Pinnell, Allington, Richardson, or similar as evidenced by interview.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Master's degree in reading, curriculum & instruction, or an applicable field of study
- Bilingual elementary certification
- Spanish language fluency (oral & written)
- Master Reading Teacher, Reading Specialist credential, or applicable credential or endorsement
- Experience providing coaching and/or training to both new and experienced teachers
- Experience providing Tier 3/individualized reading
intervention.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Work independently once given a project.
- Present information clearly and concisely.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Preferred Knowledge & Abilities
- Knowledge of current local school district teacher evaluation and coaching practices.
- Knowledge of effective practices in teacher preparation (both traditional and alternative certification routes).
Licensing / Professional Certification
- Elementary teaching certification (current or recent)
- Preferred: a relevant reading credential or endorsement, such as Master Reading Teacher, Reading Specialist, or similar.
Other Requirements
- This is a grant funded position, and is contingent on funding availability.
- The selected candidate must be available for 15- 19 hours per week, Monday through Friday during the academic year. The candidate must be available for occasional evening/weekend training events (2-4 per year, scheduled well in advance).
- This position is only fully active during tutoring service weeks (approximately 34 weeks during the academic year), and has significantly reduced hours during ‘off' weeks such as winter, spring, and summer breaks.
- The selected candidate must not plan significant time off work during peak tutor training times (August, September, January, & February).
If selected candidate is a TRS retiree, it is the candidate's responsibility to work with TRS and Human Resources to ensure compliance with retirement restrictions.
Hourly Rate: $30.00
