Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Director will serve as a leader in Student Affairs in implementing programs related to social justice education, social consciousness, ethical reasoning, belief systems, and community engagement, including stewarding community partnerships. Based in the Division of Student Affairs, the Director will oversee the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life ( RSL ) and Center for Social Justice and Community Impact ( SJCI ). This includes attentively supervising professional staff members: the Interfaith Engagement Coordinator, LGBTQ+ Engagement Coordinator, and Campus Compact AmeriCorps member serving in partnership at the Attleboro YMCA, and Administrative Coordinator; as well as supervising student leaders including the civic engagement student intern, social justice student intern, Brave, Bold and First Living, Learning Community LLC Peer Mentor(s), and overseeing the department’s educational social media platforms on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Departmental leadership: Oversee the budget, staffing, and strategic goals for the Center for Social Justice and Community Impact and Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.

Student Leadership Development: Serve as creator of innovative educational experiences on campus that build students’ understanding of and skills in social justice, community/civic engagement, and social advocacy. Collaborate with student-led theme houses and student organizations to engage them in this work.

Student Programming and Support: Maintain and oversee SJCI and RSL’s calendar of signature programs, including but not limited to Equal Pay Day, 9/11 Days of Service, Alternative Spring Break, Wheaton Tutor Outreach Program, Safe Zone Trainings, Trans Day of Visibility, the Icon Series; Focus on First-Gen Day, and Early Arrival Programs: Brave, Bold and First and Open Pride. Collaborate with student organizations and other student support offices to develop programs and other initiatives that support historically marginalized students.

Community Engagement: Deepen and maintain existing community partnerships with Norton Public Schools and Head Start, the Attleboro YMCA, and Norton Town leaders, and other external partners in greater Bristol County to encourage Wheaton student sustained involvement in community partnerships through service.

Project Management: Oversee, ensure compliance, and implementation of Campus Compact AmeriCorps project/grant focused on food security and the alleviation of poverty. Draw upon lessons learned from the project to coordinate the ad-hoc Wheaton food pantry and determine when and if it should become a standing campus resource.

Campus-Wide Student Development: Serve as a leader in Student Affairs and work as a thought partner with the Student Affairs Leadership Team ( SALT ) in strategically addressing challenges that arise on campus with a student development framework and to encourage student personal development.

Campus-Wide Equity and Belonging Initiatives: Serve as a member of the First-Gen and Low-Income Task Force, the Network for LGBTQ+ Inclusion Support and Advocacy, and one of the three DEAL Committees. If appropriate, Director, may serve on Bias Incident Response Team and/or in a leadership role for the overarching DEAL structure as one of the DEAL Co-Chairs.

Wheaton has been operating under a remote hybrid model in response to the ongoing COVID -19 pandemic. It is our hope to return to an in-person model for the fall of 2021. While this position may be temporarily remote, there is an expectation that the work performed will be on campus when the college determines it is safe to return to in-person operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in student affairs, student personnel, education or other related field and five years of related professional experience in higher education or non-profit social justice organizations required; or or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Demonstrated commitment to access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, and comfort working with diverse groups of students, staff, faculty, and community partners.
Demonstrated knowledge of community engagement, community service and civic engagement in higher education
Demonstrated understanding of identity and privilege and how it plays out in higher education
Strong history of supervisorial experience as well as overseeing and revising budgets.
Strong history of cultivating student leaders interested in social justice, civic engagement and ethical reasoning.
Strong project management skills with the ability to lead, manage, and prioritize multiple projects and tasks to completion
Strong proficiency with intersectional analysis and experience serving and supporting first-generation, LGBTQ+, low-income students, students with disabilities, and students of color, as well as promoting discussions around healthy masculinity
Strong proficiency in student development theory.
Strong experience designing and leading educational programs and events.
Exceptionally strong skills in dialogue facilitation, organizational management, community building, and relationship management, deep listening, public speaking, and professional writing.
Competence in working both collaboratively and as a strategic leader.
Ability to adapt easily to shifting priorities and deadlines.
Two or more years of staff supervision experience.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.
Approachable and able to relate to students and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with AmeriCorps program.
Familiarity with interfaith dialogue and activities and basic world religions literacy.
Familiarity with food security and hunger issues in local communities and on college campuses.
