Job Description

The Web Application Developer supports the brand engagement and marketing team for the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU. This individual will work closely and collaboratively with users to design, create, develop, enhance and maintain web content, tools, functionality and format to ensure consistency in content in accordance with established standards, guidelines, and best practice methods.

 

Salary Range

Essential Duties

Develops web forms, templates, database-driven web pages, new web tools and dynamic areas within web pages designed to enhance, sustain and support ideas and vision of the area in compliance with established styles and standards. Leads site architecture planning, hosting platform and DNS configuration, custom module/plugin development and advanced CMS theming and site building. Stays abreast of and applies web application accessibility best practices and standards. Promotes accessibility practices on teams and educates others in their use. Implements debugging protocols based on thorough knowledge of the platforms involved. Collaborates with unit representatives, marketing team members and others within the university web community. Effectively communicates with team members, clients and stakeholders. Assists in leading team of developers and contributes to their technical growth. Self-motivating, and seeks growth opportunities to actively cultivate skills. Effectively organizes and manages own tasks and priorities in alignment with marketing team leadership and deadlines. Provides technical support in the production of multimedia-based layouts, graphics, animations, video and sound; designs web interfaces and develops layout design/content; selects illustrative materials for use ensuring consistency, accuracy and compliance with all standards. Prepares training materials and associated documentation.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or closely related field AND 3 years web and database experience which includes creating and updating table structures and views as well as CSS development; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of Wordpress for consistent user experience of website and all pages; strong understanding of graphic design principles and practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge with GA4 and SEO best practices
  • Experience with web application development using modern Javascript and/or React, and PHP
  • Experience with web accessibility best practices for WCAG 2.1 compliance
  • Experience with HTML5, CSS3
  • Experience with Git and GitHub, especially working with multiple branches
  • Mobile and/or responsive design
  • Databases and SQL
  • Knowledge of OOP principles in PHP 5.x and greater
  • Current on secure web programming techniques

 

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate verbally in to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
