Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Career Advisor will be responsible for providing career exploration and professional development-related advising and programming to Wheaton students. Your engagement will include relevant career development topics, including choosing a career path, job & internship search strategies, networking guidance, interviewing assistance, and reviews of application materials. This work will often be done in collaboration with Student Success Advisors and other campus partners.

Employer Relations and Content Development
Administratively, this role will
  • implement strategies to increase student and employer engagement and develop focused programs for distinct populations,
  • prepare and send weekly marketing emails to targeted student groups including information regarding upcoming career events and relevant jobs/internships,
  • coordinate annual fall and spring career fairs using Handshake,
  • manage contact notes, approve new employers, job postings, events, and monthly reporting via the Handshake system,
  • serve as point of contact for all employer inquiries and outreach – interact frequently with employers about recruiting students and alumni by providing expert advice tailored to employers’ needs, connecting them with Handshake, virtual and on-camp recruiting options, career fairs and other ways of reaching Wheaton students and alumni,
  • support pro-active strategies to engage new and different employers in recruiting students and alumni, through networking events, site visits, on-campus meetings, scheduled calls and other outreach initiatives
  • administer and oversee annual First Destination Survey
  • remain current with employment/industry trends and best practices in recruiting,
  • generate reports and analysis of recruiting activity upon request and produce year-end report of employer activity,
  • engage students through social media and vendor-created content.

  • You have a demonstrated understanding of the career development needs of undergraduate college students and an ability to foster student career success.
  • You have a proven ability to use Handshake or similar career CMS systems.
  • You are excited about acquiring career-related knowledge of the liberal arts and the careers connected to Wheaton’s academic programs
  • You are a good listener and want to advance and use your excellent oral and written communication skills to engage with students and represent Career Services in the larger Wheaton community.
  • You can work independently and can be a creative and contributing member of a team.
  • You are a fast learner and can quickly adapt to new assignments and priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of experience related to career advising and the college recruitment process from either the higher education or industry side (employer relations, human resources, talent recruitment, etc.)
  • Familiarity with the benefit of a residential liberal arts education and ability to articulate the value of liberal arts students to employers.
  • Experience in designing and implementing innovative programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media, technology, and digital communication/presentation tools (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Excel, PowerPoint, Handshake, etc.) to engage students and employers and to deliver effective career development/recruitment programming.
  • Awareness of and ability to gain understanding of college academic policies and other laws, regulations and policies that affect student success.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects.
  • Strong organizational and self-management skills.
  • Ability and desire to think creatively and reimagine what has been; value the opportunity to expand and maximize.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (preferably in business, human resources, higher education administration, or a related field)
  • Specialized knowledge of employer relations, recruitment and/or hiring practices.
  • Experience working with data management, data analytics, client prospecting and marketing.
  • Proficiency with Handshake career management system a plus.
