Position Description

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Community Engagement (VCDCE), the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) provides leadership in support of the university’s commitment to develop an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the community, including students, staff and faculty members and alumni. This individual will assist in advancing the strategic direction for the various departments in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and the university at large.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the VCDCE in developing, implementing and assessing campus wide vision for access and inclusion;
  • Provide vision and leadership in developing and directing diversity education and training program for students, faculty and staff;
  • Supervise the Director of the Center for Inclusion and Cross-Cultural Engagement, Diversity Education & Strategic Initiatives Director, and Inclusive Excellence & Engagement Director;
  • Support outreach, development, recruitment, and retention of faculty and staff;
  • Co-Chair the Bias Education and Response Team (BERT);
  • Assist the VCDCE in creating and reviewing university policies, procedures, and guidelines related to diversity, equity and inclusion;
  • Support Pathway to Equity strategic planning and assessment efforts;
  • Collaborate with the University of Mississippi Alumni Association to support and strengthen alumni affinity groups;
  • Collaborate with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to support the development of grant proposals and research projects focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Oversee branding and communication strategies in collaboration with University Marketing and Communications;
  • Support the development and execution of annual campus climate surveys;
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the VCDCE’s leadership team to execute operational goals;
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance staff effectiveness, teamwork, communications, and professional development;
  • Develop and implement strategies to secure grants and funding to support the advancement of student, faculty, and staff success initiatives;
  • Conduct research and analysis; produce reports, correspondence, and issue briefings based on research findings;
  • Represent the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement on various university and community committees;
  • Perform administrative assignments and special projects as directed by the VCDCE
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree required; Candidates with a doctoral degree in a related field are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in areas related to access, engagement and success in higher education, supporting communities from underrepresented backgrounds, and/or creating inclusive campus environments. Candidates with professional experience in the administration of a multicultural center/diversity program office are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, research and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically, strategically, and to address emerging diversity, equity and inclusion trends and issues in higher education.
  • Experience serving as the hiring manager and direct supervisor of full-time employees.
  • Experience serving as the signatory authority for departmental operational planning and budget management.
  • Experience leading a team in advancing a diversity strategic plan.
  • Evidence of experience and effective performance working with students, faculty and staff at the post-secondary level.
  • Strong concern for creating an inclusive climate for students, faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to the importance of diversity in the attainment of divisional and institutional goals and objectives.
  • Record of working effectively to promote an environment of collegiality and inclusion.
