Postdoctoral Research Associate
About the Opportunity
Job Summary
The Marine and Environmental Sciences department at Northeastern University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with regional ocean modeling, benthic biogeochemistry, and marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR).
Benthic sediments serve as the only long-term storage of oceanic carbon, and there are major knowledge gaps in our understanding of sedimentary processes that hinder our ability to assess the effectiveness and durability of different mCDR strategies. Overall project will be focused on the development of a novel benthic model to be run with existing ocean circulation and biogeochemistry models to simulate different mCDR strategies (kelp aquaculture and sinking, and cessation of trawling).
We are looking for a motivated researcher to implement a high-resolution MOM6-COBALT (Modular Ocean Model - Carbon, Ocean Biogeochemistry, and Lower Trophics) grid in the U.S. Northeast region. The researcher will also work closely with collaborators at Princeton University, NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) and Rutgers University to couple a novel benthic model to MOM6-COBALT. This work is part of an exciting collaborative project that also includes researchers from University of Maine, University of Maryland, and University of Connecticut.
Key Responsibilities
- Creating grid and forcing files for ocean modeling experiments
in the US East Coast
- Designing, running, and analyzing model experiments
- Mentoring and instructing undergraduate and graduate
students
- Collaborating with team members at other universities involved
in the project to conduct and evaluate mCDR simulations using
coupled circulation, biogeochemistry and benthic models
Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required in either oceanography, biogeochemistry, Earth system sciences or associated field. Candidates with computational expertise or interest in model development are especially encouraged to apply. Initial appointment will be for one year, with possibility of renewal for an additional year subject to satisfactory performance.
Application should include a CV with list of publications, statement of research interests (2 pages maximum), and contact information for three references. Any questions should be sent to c.schultz@northeastern.edu.
