Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Retail Supervisor. The Retail Supervisor is a part-time (20 hours per week), academic year position, starting at $21.35 per hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Retail Supervisor supports the efforts of Amherst College Dining Services in providing the diverse campus community with excellent service and production of our menus. This position assists the culinary team with the production and implementation of menu items. This individual takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

The Supervisor, having knowledge of all ingredients, is committed to quality and excellent customer service. Ensures all food items, proper serving utensils, and menu signage are ready for service; and cleans the dining area during and after service. Supervises students and casual staff and takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

The work schedule varies and corresponds to the College's operational needs. As our work is central to student life and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule with extended shift times is required. In addition, the position is designated as providing essential services and may be required to report to work, or remain on duty even when the College is closed.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Operations
  • Provide service to guests in the dining hall
  • Obtain any items needed from the culinary team
  • Engage with customers by promoting local foods, newly featured menu items and answer any questions
  • Remove dirty dishes from the dining area
  • Clean and maintain serving and dining areas with table wiping and other sanitation duties
  • Retrieve supplies and restock necessary food items
  • Effectively collaborate with a diverse group of colleagues and students


Supervision
  • Supervise a diverse group of students and casual staff
  • Maintain a commitment to the quality of our resources and work to prevent loss and eliminate waste
  • Promote our standards of quality and service and the safety of our work environment
  • Manage inventory levels and quality; maintain the organization of storage areas


Communication and Workday
  • Regularly checking your amherst.edu email is required to stay up to date on college-wide and departmental communications
    • This includes communication by email, message boards and The Daily Mammouth
    • Important information is shared through these communications that affect your job and help you stay up to date on departmental specific updates, upcoming meetings and events
  • Learning and using Workday to manage clocking in and out for shifts, time off requests and all other functions required to manage your personal information


Qualifications:

Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Allergen Awareness Certified as required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or be able to achieve within six months of employment
  • ServSafe Certification or be able to achieve within six months of employment
  • One to two years of supervisory experience in a fast Food Environment or related field
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, customer service, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to taste and work with any and all ingredients used
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong time management skills including the ability to follow verbal and written communications
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Commitment to or experience working with a diverse community
  • Ability to work extra shifts and/or overtime if needed
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test


Preferred
  • Three or more years of supervising experience in a restaurant setting
