The Assistant Vice President ( AVP ) for Diversity and Inclusion provides strategic leadership in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion ( ODI ) playing a critical role in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility ( DEIA ) across campus. The AVP focuses on the daily management of departmental operations, budget, and planning, and project management of the DEIA Strategic Plan. The AVP supervises the director of inclusion and belonging, director of learning and development, and director of research and assessment (forthcoming). The AVP provides oversight of signature ODI programs, including: retention initiatives (staff mentoring program, community-building events, Posse Program), DEIA professional development (micro-credential, train-the-trainers), and program assessment/evaluation (learning outcomes assessment, campus climate). The AVP facilitates ODI staff meetings and retreats. The AVP works directly with the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion to achieve the goals of the DEIA Strategic Plan, Academic Strategic Plan, and other institutional priorities that promulgate SU’s commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming campus. The AVP works collaboratively with the campus community and cultivates institutional capacity to ensure DEIA initiatives are comprehensive and sustainable.

Job Description

Qualifications

Master’s degree required. Doctoral/terminal degree preferred. Minimum of 7-10 years of experience advancing strategic diversity leadership issues in higher education.

Demonstrated commitment and experience advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace.

  • Experience supervising professional staff and students.
  • Strong leadership experience/skills.
Responsibilities
  • Departmental leadership: Serve as a senior leader in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Provide supervision and oversight of staff and graduate assistants in three of the five departmental focal areas: Inclusion and Belonging, Learning and Development, and Research and Assessment. Incorporate metrics, best practices, and theoretical frameworks to develop, implement, assess, and evaluate departmental programs. Galvanize ODI staff and collaborators toward unit and institutional priorities. Convene ODI staff meetings and retreats. Coordinate ODI staff development. Facilitate ODI Partners meetings. Work closely with ODI leadership team to establish a positive, achievement-orientated, and supportive work environment and culture. Provide strategic budget planning, development, and oversight. Submit formative and summative reports to the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion regarding program goals and impact. Serve as second-in-command within the Office and represent the Vice President at campus and community events as assigned.
  • Campus leadership: Under the direction of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, lead and participate in planning, program development, evaluation, and policy formation to ensure diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are integrated in campus programs, policies, and procedures. Provide leadership, guidance, and consultation on DEIA matters in University committees, councils, working groups, events, and programs. Lead campus climate assessment efforts to track longitudinal progress and areas of improvement. Provide leadership and oversight of special projects and ad hoc working groups as assigned by the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion.
  • DEIA Strategic Plan Project Management: Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to develop timelines, measure progress, and report achievements of DEIA Strategic Plan goals to the Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion. Assist with summative and formative reports related to DEIA goals within the Academic Strategic Plan.
  • Other duties as assigned.
