Job Description Summary

The College of Human Sciences at Auburn University invites nominations and applications for the position of Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies ( ADR ) expected to begin January 1, 2024. The ADR will be responsible for all aspects of the research, scholarship, economic development, and graduate studies across the College of Human Sciences and will report to the Dean.

Primary responsibilities
Primary responsibilities will include: (1) mentor faculty in producing quality scholarly work; (2) facilitate recruitment and mentoring of quality graduate students; (3) identify funding opportunities from a range of potential sponsors; (4) assist faculty in developing a successful record of securing external sponsorship for scholarly work; (5) develop and promote interdisciplinary partnerships yielding scholarly outcomes; (6) manage the College research and graduate studies administrative office; (7) promote the Human Sciences research agenda at the national level; (8) facilitate matters regarding federal compliance, research administration, and legislative opportunities and/or guidelines; (9) manage conflict of interest, Intellectual Property (IP), and technology transfer; (10) possess an understanding of the landscape of economic development at local, state and broader levels to identify opportunities for human sciences; (11) identify and expand commercialization and product development opportunities; (12) facilitate active research involvement in the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station ( AAES ) and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System ( ACES ); (13) serve as research liaison between the College and the AAES, Office of the Senior Vice-President for Research and Economic Development, and the Graduate School; (14) represent the Dean and the College to internal and external constituencies, and; (15) create a plan for meeting the research and economic development goals of the college and university.

College
The College of Human Sciences at Auburn University, established in 1916, has approximately 1,670 students distributed among the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management; the departments of Consumer and Design Sciences; Nutritional Sciences; and Human Development and Family Science, and an Office of Global Education. These academic units offer seven undergraduate degrees, four minors, five master’s degree programs, and four doctoral programs. The College of Human Sciences includes two academic centers, Hunger Solutions Institute and The Cary Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies. The College of Human Sciences offers several study abroad programs and is home to the institution’s only permanent international campus, situated outside Rome, Italy. Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for the position include:
  • earned doctorate in an area of the human sciences or a related field with a strong record of producing quality scholarly work which would support an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure at the time employment begins;
  • demonstrated record of successfully securing federally funded external sponsorship for scholarly projects as the principal investigator;
  • experience in methods to identify diverse funding opportunities from a range of potential sponsors;
  • communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to create an environment that promotes and rewards scholarly work;
  • experience in developing and promoting interdisciplinary partnerships yielding scholarly outcomes;
  • ability to manage an administrative office to facilitate scholarship and grantsmanship, and;
  • experience with budgets, research facilities management, and issues related to conflict of interest.
  • The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment and excellent communication skills are required.
Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications for the position include:
  • demonstrated record of leadership for federally funded scholarship at R1 level or equivalent;
  • experience in forming effective partnerships, whether public-private and/or civic-public collaboration(s), to advance workforce and economic development;
  • experience managing intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer activities.
