Job Description Summary

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology of the College of Agriculture at Auburn University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Extension Professor. This faculty position is a full-time, twelve-month, non-tenure track 75% Extension and 25% research appointment that is based on main campus in Auburn, AL. This position includes benefits such as health insurance and retirement. The projected start date is May 1, 2024.

Responsibilities: In this position, you are expected to develop and maintain an impactful state and regionally-recognized Extension and research program that promotes the health and productivity of managed honeybees. This should include the development, and eventual adoption by beekeepers, of regionally appropriate best practices that address the beekeeping industry’s most critical threats. You will be the primary resource in Alabama for apiculture information and education through your contributions to existing and new Alabama Extension Beekeeping activities. You are expected to lead the Extension Beekeeping Team that currently consists of one faculty member and two regional extension agents stationed across Alabama. You will also serve as an educational resource for the Alabama Master Beekeepers’ program. Ultimately, your efforts will benefit the state and region’s beekeeping industries through increased efficiency and expansion of activities like honey production, queen/package/nuc production, and crop pollination. Furthermore, your research efforts will include grant proposal writing, management of funded projects, scientific outputs such as papers and presentations, as well as mentoring of graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Entomology, Biological Sciences or a related discipline at the time employment begins. The candidate must have beekeeping experience, as well as excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. The incumbent must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include experience with, and strong interests in, Extension programming, adult education, and natural and/or social science research techniques relevant to honeybees and beekeepers.
