Position Purpose

The Division of Theatre and Dance in the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Central Missouri seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor with demonstrated strengths in lighting Design, Sound Design, and associated technologies. Responsibilities include teaching courses for majors in the design/tech program, one general education course, and other courses based on the candidate’s skills, interests, and /or the needs of the Division. The candidate will be tasked with designing the lighting and/or sound of the production season, mentoring student designers, contributing to the advancement and growth of the Design/Technology program, assisting student recruitment, and academically mentoring students. Additional duties including working in collaboration with theatre, dance, and other arts, faculty and staff, and service on division, school, college, and university committees.

UCM Theatre and Dance has approximately 75 majors and minors between its BA,
BFA, and SSE degree programs along with the available minors in Dance and Theatre. We are a NAST accredited program with strong regional, national, and international
presence through the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

The Division of Theatre and Dance facilities possess state-of-the art equipment. The 440-seat James L Highlander Theater’s Lighting System was recently renovated with
updated lighting and sound technology, including a generous inventory of movers,
LEDs, and conventional fixtures as well as digital lighting and sound consoles.

Candidates must have an MFA in Lighting Design with education and a record of Sound Design/Technology experience or a terminal degree with extensive professional experience in Lighting and Sound Design.

A minimum of two years of teaching experience is preferred. Ideal candidates will be innovators in the theatre field with a focus on cutting-edge artistry, will have a strong skill set in current digital design techniques and advanced knowledge in multiple applications and current software environments. Candidates must demonstrate and sustain a strong scholarly research focus and/or professional creative projects along with the development of a regional and national reputation in order to achieve tenure.
