Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a full-time Grounds & Nursery Services Specialist 3 at the Walla Walla campus.

General Responsibilities:

Under general direction, this position is key in the efforts of ensuring management and appearance of all WWCC Athletic fields and exterior landscape. Working in the Grounds Department of Facility Service, staff in this work unit assist with daily performance of snow removal, irrigation, lawn maintenance, mowing, edging, leaf collection, general equipment repair, overall cleanliness on campus, servicing of exterior trash containers, tree/bush trimming, fertilizing and spray application, etc. Grounds staff set the tone for the campus and the fruits of their labor is seen and critiqued by visitors on a daily basis. The cleanliness and well-maintained grounds help deliver a comfortable learning environment for students.

Essential Functions:

Athletic Field Work
Tasks include:

  • Perform athletic field maintenance including mowing, aerating, topdressing, seeding, sodding, trimming, field painting, irrigation and turf care, fertilizing; spray chemicals including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related chemicals; follow proper safety precautions; proper pruning techniques and tree removal.
  • Perform infield maintenance and repair work of baseball/softball fields including, watering infields, repairing bases, pitching mounds, batter's boxes and transition areas of infield and outfield.
  • Perform tilling, rolling and fertilizing soil; construct new planting areas and maintain high traffic wear areas on athletic field.
  • Perform maintenance of irrigation system including preventive maintenance, replacement of heads, broken pipes, winterization and summarization of irrigation system and monitor flow rates of fields.
  • Operate or drive a variety of specialized equipment utilized in assigned projects including tractors, lawn mowers, power and hand tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, edgers and related equipment; assist in training others to use specialized equipment as necessary.
  • Perform maintenance of parking areas and dugouts; pick up paper and other debris.


  • Campus Field Work
    Tasks include:
  • Working with other Grounds department staff and under direction of supervisor, performs planting, mowing, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, tree/shrub management, and irrigation repair.
  • Contributes to cultural turf management practices including aerating, seeding, topdressing, and fertilizing.
  • Assist with soil preparation, sod installation and mowing, as well as growing in new areas of turf by helping with fertilizer applications, monitoring irrigation, assessing conditions, and recommending adjustments to irrigation.
  • Tools used for this work will include, but is not limited to, chemical applications, biological control methods, hand tools, string trimmers, blade cutters, or brush mowers, riding mowers, and leaf blowers.

  • Snow Removal
    Tasks include:
  • Operates snow clearing equipment to clear snow from sidewalks, streets, parking lots, steps, ADA ramps, and entry ways in a timely manner
  • Conduct snow removal and ice abatement to enhance campus safety.
  • Responds on weekends and before or after shifts to perform snow removal as required based on college needs and activities.

  • Administrative Responsibilities
    Tasks include:
  • Email management, parts research, computer-based troubleshooting, document retention
  • Complete and close out Work Orders in Megamations work managements system and enter time worked and materials used.

  • Safety
    Tasks include:
  • Contribute to a safe working environment for self, co-workers and the public. Adheres to all Federal, State, Local, and Department safety guidelines, including any concerning chemical applications and disposal. Reports unsafe conditions or accidents to supervisor. Attends and participates in safety trainings

  • Other:
    Additional miscellaneous duties as needed to support department and campus operations or special events.

  • Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or equivalent and at least two years' experience in turf or landscape management.
  • Knowledge of application of grounds chemicals (e.g., fertilizers, pesticides, etc.).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a current driver's license.
  • Physical ability to do required work.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • Able to read and interpret instructions on Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Physically able to lift or relocate up to 50 pounds, with or without the help of hand truck or Dollie. Must be able to do the required work that includes repeated stooping, bending, operating heavy equipment, climbing and working from height of an eight-foot ladder, stand and walk continuously during your entire assigned shift.

  • Desired Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience in landscape industry with a minimum of 2 years working in the athletic field or turf care.
  • Considerable knowledge in the athletic field turf management, growing cycles, soil health, care and maintenance.
  • Ability to identify turf pests and institute turfgrass maintenance and treatment.
  • Knowledge of pest management guidelines and standards.
  • Must have experience with fertilizer selection and application


  • Conditions/Terms of Employment
    This classified position is in a bargaining unit for which WPEA Higher Ed is the exclusive representative.

    This position has a typical working environment that will consist of both indoor and outdoor activities, often in inclement weather. Risks include operating tools and machinery, rotating equipment, chemical hazards, and other tools of the trade. Routine assignments also include working at heights and from ladders, and lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds with or without the use of hand trucks or dollies. Working with or around machinery and equipment with moving parts and other typical tools and equipment found in grounds/maintenance work. Must be able to stand and/or walk 8 hours per day. This is a 40 hour per week position Mon-Fri 6:00 am- 2:30 pm. WWCC maintenance staff work a variety of shifts around the clock and must be able to work any days and shifts. Occasional overtime and callbacks may be required. Direct contact with the public, students, and other institutional staff. Occasional travel for training or institutional purposes. Safety practices consistent with WISHA.

    The college has an excellent benefit program including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave; paid vacation leave; and retirement plan. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) unless declined at time of hire. WWCC requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary. The college is tobacco free.
