Walla Walla Community College is accepting applications to fill the part-time role of Grounds & Building Services Specialist 1 for the Water & Environmental Center on the Walla Walla Campus.

General Responsibilities:

This position works under the supervision of the Water & Environmental Center (WEC) Director to maintain the exterior gardens and educational displays and provide operational support for interior spaces and special events. Work load will vary seasonally with opportunities for more interior work during the non-gardening season.


Essential Functions:

  • Provide ongoing maintenance of the WEC exterior spaces, including but not limited to the habitat garden and other plant displays, pathways, common areas along the south side of the WEC, display gardens along the north side of the WEC, and the outdoor classroom west of the WEC.
    • Prepare soil, install plants, maintain plants (pruning, deadheading, fertilizing), weeding garden beds, mowing, edging, raking, mulching, applying pesticides and herbicides as directed.
  • Assist WEC staff with the ongoing management of the WEC interior event and program spaces.
    • Setup and break down of tables and chairs for meeting rooms and other interior or exterior event spaces, maintenance and care of meeting room tables and chairs, assist staff with the installation and maintenance of interior displays and exhibits, assist staff with the maintenance and management of storage areas.

  • Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Ability to perform outside work in inclement weather, follow oral and written directions.
  • Physically able to lift 50 pounds, with or without the use of a cart or hand truck and able to do the required work that includes repeated stooping, bending, operating equipment, climbing, standing and walking continuously during your entire assigned shift.
  • Any experience that indicates a skill set or skill level to perform the assigned tasks; experience operating the tools of the trade.

  • Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • One year of gardening or grounds keeping experience.


  • Conditions/Terms of Employment
    This part-time temporary position (up to 17-hours per week). Schedule to be arranged with WEC staff and may include limited evening or weekend hours; hours vary seasonally due to garden dormancy.

    Work performed both inside and outside, including display gardens and outdoor classroom; exterior work will be seasonal but include work in inclement weather. Working with or around machinery and equipment with moving parts. Typical tools and equipment found in custodial and grounds work. Direct contact with the public, students, and other institutional staff.

    Vacation, sick leave and personal leave benefits are available on a pro-rated basis.

    Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment.
