Scope of Job:
Trainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Works under minimal supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment in research and/or teaching. Performs teaching and/or research work as required within the classroom and/or project assigned.

Testing the analgesic efficacy and safety of several compounds as well as evaluating the therapeutic mechanism of action using behavioral, biochemical, pharmacological assays. The activities expected to be performed in this position include study design, execution of various experiments, data collection, data interpretation, laboratory supplies, and daily operations of the lab.



Description of Duties:
The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:

Test the analgesic efficacy and safety of several compounds as well as evaluating the therapeutic mechanism of action using behavioral, biochemical, pharmacological assays. The activities expected to be performed in this position include study design, execution of various experiments, data collection, data interpretation, laboratory supplies, and daily operations of the lab. Establish and maintain successful interactions / collaborations.

Conduct experiments to understand the pain. The type of pain we are interested in is chronic neuropathic pain, including HIV-associated neuropathic pain. We are interested in pain and Alzheimer’s disease comorbidities. Testing the analgesic efficacy of various compounds individually or in combination. Looking for the potential mechanism involved and the potential side effects. Conduct several behavioral experiments in rodents (e.g., pain-like behaviors, cognitive functions), and biochemistry and cell biology. Analyze and interpret the results of experiments. Prepare reports and papers for publication in refereed journals. Assist with lab management duties such as maintaining and troubleshooting lab equipment and ensuring lab safety protocols are followed. Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines in conducting research, especially when dealing with hazardous materials and/or biological samples. Participate in departmental activities and contribute to academic and scientific discussions.

Required Education:
Doctoral degree from an accredited University (based on funding restrictions degree may need to have been conferred within a set period of time previous to assuming position).

Experience working with animals and the ability to work in a team and think independently.

Equipment:
Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Standard office environment.

This is a trainee position subject to a specific time as agreed to by stakeholders. Communication skills and fluent spoken and written English.
