The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Monsoon System Postdoctoral Associate!

Postdoctoral Research Assistant: Research Project on Monsoon Dynamics and Air-Sea Interactions Over the Arabian Sea Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, CU Boulder, Boulder, CO 80309.

The monsoon system serves as the lifeline for one-third of the world's population, playing a crucial role in the agriculture and economy of regions surrounding the Indian Ocean. Its year-to-year variability has significant implications for water management, food production, and economic stability. The Arabian Sea is a key player in establishing monsoonal patterns over the Indian subcontinent and serves as a vital heat reservoir in the global climate system. Recent evidence suggests an accelerated rate of warming in this region, accompanied by increasing occurrences of extreme weather events such as cyclones.

Our upcoming research project aims to enhance the understanding of air-sea interactions and transitional processes in the Arabian Sea during the onset of the monsoon season. We will employ regional coupled models and global climate models to conduct comprehensive studies. The project aims to provide foundational insights that will improve the accuracy of Earth-system predictions for this critically important region.

By contributing to this project, you will play a part in improving the reliability of weather and climate predictions, which can have significant social and economic impact in regions dependent on the monsoon system.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Investigate the air-sea interactions in the Arabian Sea during monsoon onset.
  • Utilize regional coupled models and global climate models for data analysis Contribute to the understanding of the Arabian Sea's role in monsoonal variability and extreme weather events.
What We Can Offer
The hiring range for this full-time positions is $65,000 - $70,000 a year.

What We Require
  • PhD degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography, or related field.
  • Experience in climate modeling and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
What You Will Need
  • Previous experience in the field of predictability, ocean-atmosphere coupled modeling, monsoon studies, or weather and climate modelling will be an advantage.
