Position Description

The Marion M. and John S. Stokes Jr. Visiting Professorship in Race and Culture in Media

The School of Communication & Design at Loyola University New Orleans invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track position at the rank of Visiting Professor in Race and Culture in Media to begin in the fall of 2024.

The candidate’s teaching and service will prepare our students for future success in the communications industry by providing a critical lens to understand the relationship between media and communication regarding race, ethnicity, equality, belonging, and identity.

The School offers communication degrees in advertising, journalism, design, digital filmmaking, visual communication, and public relations. The preferred candidate will develop courses that span these concentrations with a commitment with a tangible track record to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The candidate will also foster a broad conversation throughout the School, among faculty, students, and the School’s professional labs and competition teams, about the intersection of media, race, and culture.

Responsibilities include teaching, mentoring, and advising students, faculty governance participation, assistance in recruiting, participating in school events, and working across disciplines and departments to enrich the student experience. We seek a high-energy colleague who is student-centered and brings a positive collegial attitude and additional expertise to our team.

Course load: Teach four undergraduate core curricula and/or courses in specialization courses per semester.

The start date of this position is August 1, 2024.

Required Qualifications:
A master’s degree is required and/or significant and relevant professional experience. A Ph.D. is preferred. Professional experience in journalism or strategic communication is preferred, as well as teaching experience (traditional and online settings) at the college level with an understanding of the demands of higher education. A portfolio of professional design work and scholarly endeavors is required. Digital portfolios are the preferred presentation format.


THE SCHOOL: The School of Communications and Design, one of three schools in the College of Music and Media, serves more than 400 students. The School includes the departments of journalism, design, digital filmmaking, and strategic communications, with areas in advertising, public relations, and visual communication. The School is committed to fostering a culturally diverse educational environment.
