Scope of Job:
To assist in the operation of a program and/or multiple projects focusing on assisting and training beginning farmers and ranchers, exercising independent judgment and authority as required. Responsible for all phases of the program, including program deliverables, program promotion, staff supervision, planning, and innovation.
Description of Duties:
• Coordinates various activities of agricultural and rural development programs.
• Coordinates and assists with resources for small- and mid-size farmers in Texas to start and develop a successful farm operation.
• Provides training and hands-on technical assistance on sustainable production practices to agricultural producers and organizations.
• Provides guidance and instruction in the performance of a variety of maintenance and light repair tasks including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and drip-irrigation systems.
• Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations associated with and/or receiving benefit from the program.
• Helps/trains customers with agricultural site selection and preparation, production, harvesting, and marketing.
• Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars related to the program’s mission and goals.
• Assists others in writing and developing grant proposals for funding projects.
• Provides appropriate project reports and evaluations as required.
• Drafts brochures, letters, agendas, and contracts.
• May plan, develop, organize, and coordinate research and survey designs.
• Provides staff development, onsite demonstrations, and field-based experiences for faculty, students, and community partners related to sustainable agriculture.
• Coordinates and delivers mentoring, counseling, teaching, and/or training activities—performed in person and remotely—of the program.
• Represents department in official functions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

General direction from the assigned supervisor.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited university. Bilingual, able to speak Spanish
Licenses/Certifications:
As a condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
Required Experience:
• Three (3) years of experience in farming, agriculture, and agricultural extension with knowledge of the farm, agricultural-related equipment, and its care maintenance including program planning/coordination or related experience, or
• One (1) year of the required experience with a Master’s degree, or
Five (5) years of the required experience with an Associate degree or 60 hours of College Credit, or Seven (7) years of the required experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment. Must be able to demonstrate the use of farm and agricultural-related equipment, such as tractors, mowers, trimmers, etc. Knowledge of general trades tools, such as screwdrivers, hoes and shovels, wrenches, and pliers.
Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties, including occasional lifting and physical activities related to farming and ranching. Normal office, classroom, or outside environment. Some travel, and weekend and evening work are required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Program may require the ability to drive a car for local or distant travel for consultation, training, meetings, or on-site demonstrations.
Other:
Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students, and the public. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Computer skills, familiarity with MS software and videoconferencing software preferred. Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Independent decision making and problem-solving ability. Must demonstrate effective project promotion skills, and the ability to develop and maintain strong working relations with internal and external agencies and entities. May require the ability to lift and manipulate tools and bags weighing up to 50 pounds.
