Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering

The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks

Assistant/Associate Professor in

Advanced Manufacturing, Material Characterization, and Metrology

Location: Arizona State University – Polytechnic Campus (Mesa, AZ)

The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, an integral part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), is actively seeking qualified applicants for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions. We are inviting applications at the ranks of Assistant or Associate Professor, with expertise in "manufacturing processes, materials characterization, and materials metrology," with applications spanning various fields, including microelectronics, energy storage, healthcare, aerospace, and automotive industries.

The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks is dedicated to advancing innovation in manufacturing science and engineering. It boasts a dynamic group of 18 faculty members, including six recipients of the NSF Career award, who collaborate across various research areas like process science, automation & robotics, smart manufacturing, material testing, data analytics, AI, and cybersecurity. The School's location in Phoenix offers close ties to Aerospace & Defense industry, Semiconductor/Microelectronics and National Laboratories, facilitating collaborative research. Notably, the School has a unique asset in that it offers Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in manufacturing engineering. The school is also building a state-of-the-art approximately 200,000-square-foot facility, further enhancing its leadership in manufacturing innovation.

We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.

This search is part of ASU’s engagement with the Arizona’s New Economy Initiative (NEI), a bold effort to ensure that Arizona leads the new economy that will rely on engineering, computing and technology to drive sustainable growth, resilience and opportunities for all. NEI investments in the Fulton Schools of Engineering will grow our world class faculty to accelerate research outcomes and to broaden student access to our programs; support Science and Technology Centers to foster the growth of new economy Industries; and expand experiential learning and workforce training opportunities.

We are specifically interested in candidates with research interests that encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Materials Testing and Characterization: Pioneering advanced techniques for characterizing manufactured materials, including metals, composites, semiconductors, and ceramics. There is potential interest in automating manufacturing measurement and characterization, as well as pioneering state-of-the-art nondestructive testing methods such as radiography imaging, electromagnetic testing, thermography, and terahertz testing.
  • Sensing Systems and Digital Twin: Developing integrated sensing systems for in-situ and ex-situ manufacturing process control and evaluation. Exploring AI-assisted metrology in both in-situ and ex-situ settings, as well as the application of augmented and virtual reality in manufacturing. Pioneering sensing systems for real-time manufacturing process monitoring and digital twin creation.
  • Advanced Manufacturing Processes: Radical innovations in process engineering including semiconductor microelectronics manufacturing, continuous processing of energy-relevant materials, particulate processing, processing of energetic and defense related materials, hybrid manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, additive manufacturing, etc.), and multi-physics modeling of manufacturing processes.
  • Emerging Topics in Traditional and Advanced Manufacturing: Exploring manufacturing in challenging environments, sustainability, recycling, environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices, energy-efficient manufacturing processes, decarbonization in manufacturing, and optimizing traditional manufacturing methods such as forging, casting, welding, and rolling for enhanced efficiency.

Appointments may be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2024. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks is currently the most involved in the interest of this research.
