Under general supervision, the Painter performs the full range of skilled journey-level painting, finishing, and related work. The Painter may also provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare surfaces for painting and finishing. All surfaces must be prepared in such a way that they will produce a fine finished product. All blemishes, cracks, and imperfections should be eliminated. This will be checked by visual inspection.
  • Prepare drywall by taping, topping, and texturing. All joints, corners, and seams will be taped and finished so that they wall will not show any sign of a joint. Visual inspection of finished job will show if this has been accomplished.
  • Mix and match paints to finish. Colors must match either color chips or existing color of finish needing repair. Visual inspection of finished job will show if this has been accomplished.
  • Paint signs according to written order and architectural design. Check to see if written order was followed and if completed sign has a proper finish.
  • Maintain brushes and shop equipment. Brushes, roller and spray equipment must be thoroughly cleaned after use on ever job. Visual inspection of all equipment used to see if material has been removed.
  • Apply vinyl cloth or hang wallpaper.
  • Comply with all building, fire and life safety codes when working.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma, California GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter's apprenticeship program.
  • Valid California Driver's License

Required Qualifications
  • Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging; and a thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.
  • Must be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately; mix paints and finishes and match colors; erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders; select the most appropriate materials; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of painting work; maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to operate.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $ 5,787 - $ 6,069 per month

Classification Salary Range: $ 5,787 - $ 7,396 per month

Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary

Work schedule: Monday through Friday (6:00 am - 2:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Driver's License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Physical Exam

Employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
