Job Summary
The College of Human Sciences is excited to recruit candidates for our Communications and Marketing Specialist position. The Hunger Solutions Institute ( HSI ) Communications and Marketing Specialist will create communications, marketing, and promotional materials delivered through various mediums; coordinate public relations activities; plan and organize special events; and maintain files to support annual reporting and fund development.
About HSI : The Hunger Solutions Institute, or HSI, was established by the College of Human Sciences and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn University in February 2012 in an effort to further Auburn’s nationally recognized efforts in food security domestically and globally.
A foundational principle is that hunger is a solvable problem, but only when the relevant knowledge from all academic disciplines is combined with the abilities and strengths of all sectors. By creating multi-sector partnerships at the community, state and global levels, HSI shares knowledge and best practices and creates multi-sector coalitions to leverage the power of collective action.

Essential Functions
- Develops marketing and communication plan to promote the vision, mission, goals, and achievements of HSI
- Researches, designs, and composes content for dissemination through a variety of mediums, such as social media platforms, websites, electronic newsletters, publications, emails, and conventional media
- Coordinates the production of materials to include content/style editing, designing, printing, photography, and/or copywriting
- Coordinates communication calendars, production schedules and deadlines
- Supports consistent and robust brand messaging
- Develops and maintains marketing materials
- Prepares press releases and participates in public relations activities
- Plans and organizes special events and meetings, as well as participates at conferences
- Maintains files, databases, and electronic records to support annual reporting and fund development
- Evaluates effectiveness of communications, marketing, and/or public relations activities
- Completes other duties as assigned
- Supervises students supporting HSI communications, marketing, public relations, and special events
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Level I: Bachelor’s Degree in discipline appropriate to position with no experience.
Level II: Bachelor’s Degree in discipline appropriate to position plus 2 years experience in marketing and communications services to include print journalism .
Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge and use of various communications, marketing, public relations, and/or event planning theories, concepts, techniques, mediums, and strategies
- Demonstrated ability to write and design for various audiences in various formats
- Ability to think strategically with excellent leadership and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to maintain successful interpersonal relationships with all contacts while representing Hunger Solutions Institute
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while working as part of a team
- Ability to resolve complex problems through use of creative reasoning and logic
- Demonstrated experience with all types of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Demonstrated experience with web content management systems
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Working knowledge of desktop publishing and typesetting software applications, such as Adobe Creative Suites
