The Department of Biology at Mercyhurst University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Biology at the level of Assistant Professor to begin August 2024. The department seeks a passionate educator who works effectively with others in a collegial environment and is dedicated to student learning.
The ideal candidate will be prepared to instruct a wide range of undergraduate courses in biology for both science and non-science majors at the introductory and upper level. Preference will be given to individuals with expertise and teaching experience in ecology, environmental science, and/or organismal biology. Candidates will also have the opportunity to develop specialty courses in their areas of expertise, which may include, but are not limited to, aquatic biology, ecotoxicology, parasitology, restoration ecology, and/or wildlife/fisheries management.
In addition to pursuing teaching excellence, faculty are expected to engage in scholarly research, particularly involving undergraduate students, and participate in academic advising and service to the department, school, and university. Strong consideration will be given to candidates whose scholarly interests complement those of the existing faculty and preference given to candidates with demonstrated success in securing extramural funding to support scholarly endeavors. Research equipment available for candidates include an Applied Biosystems Real-time PCR, LI-COR Odyssey, LI-COR LI6400 Portable Photosynthesis System, epifluorescent microscope, plant tissue culture facility, green house, and a range of ecological field equipment. The university is located near to numerous protected natural areas including Presque Isle State Park, Asbury Woods, and Lake Erie that are ideal for field research.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences or a related field (ABD candidates are encouraged to apply), and a strong commitment to teaching and maintaining an active research program involving undergraduates.
