Job Description:

The education and experience will determine the grade in which this position is filled.

Animal Care Technicians cleans, feeds and waters research animals housed in CARE, as well as being responsible for checking animals' health status on a daily basis. They are also responsible for the extra duties of caring for transgenic rodents and biohazardous animals. They are also the primary trainers for newly hired ACTs.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Animal Care Technician (Grade 6)
  • High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level preferred

  • Related experience working with animals preferred

  • Or equivalent combination of education/experience

  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level is strongly encouraged within the first year of employment

Sr. Animal Care Technician (Grade 7)
  • High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Preferred: AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher (LAT) level. Certification is strongly preferred within 1 year of employment.

  • 10+ years’ experience working with animals in a research setting.

Job Competencies
  • Previous demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Required: Includes some weekend and holiday work.

  • Must be willing to work and contribute effectively in a team setting.

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.

  • Possess the ability to have meaningful and respectful two-way conversations.

  • The person in this position frequently communications with faculty who inquire about their research animals. Must be able to exchange accurate information verbally and in writing.

  • The ability to access and use email for communication and documentation.

  • Requires attendance/completion of all mandated safety training and adherence to the animal care occupational health and wellness policy.

  • Involves working with a wide variety of animals and learning about the housing and care needs of each species.

  • Requires the ability to adapt to changes that occur with short notice.

Education and criminal background check required.
