Evening Information Commons Associate - Irwin Library



Position Overview

Reporting to the Information Commons Librarian, the Information Commons Associate oversees evening operations of the Information Commons desk at Irwin Library at Butler University. This position staffs the desk and provides circulation and basic references services; they oversee the safety of the building’s resources and occupants. The Information Commons Associate is a resource for Information Commons student assistants, who staff the desk, concerning policies and procedures. The position performs processing tasks related to reserves, researching captioning requests against the libraries’ databases for faculty teaching, and manages circulation services such as overdue billing. This position serves as the singular Butler employee responsible for the building and its services during the evening hours Sunday - Thursday 4:00 PM - Midnight.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the evening operations of the Information Commons desk which entails training and managing the student workers staffing the desk and directly helping patrons locate and checkout materials and equipment.
  • Provides basic research support in response to patron questions that lie outside the IC students' knowledge expectations.
  • Sole Butler staff responsible for the safety and security of the building and its occupants. Must follow library policy and procedures and make sound judgement decisions when addressing these situations. Due to this staff member being the only staff on duty during the shift hours, a commitment to consistent attendance and arriving on time is needed to ensure the building remains open and deliver services.
  • Carries out IC desk administrative tasks which includes but is not limited to: monitoring the Information Commons Teams, email, chat, and phone communication environments while on duty; carry out library closing procedures at the end of library hours; manage and troubleshoot circulating laptop computers, iPads, cameras, and other equipment; and process and monitor the circulation overdue notices system, performing billing operations for overdues, lost, and missing items and coordinating with Student Accounts for transfer of overdue accounts and bills/credits
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma required
  • 1-2 years' experience in nonprofits, libraries, museums, cultural institution, retail, restaurants; employment positions that required strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and be dependable
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to problem-solve, resolve, or refer patron issues in a customer service environment
  • Managing skills in directing others in their work tasks (this would be with student workers)
  • Ability to follow library policy and procedures while handling emergencies regarding patron safety or building safety
  • Attention to detail in carrying out assigned administrative tasks
  • Basic knowledge in using computer applications such as Windows and Microsoft Office software and web-based office tools
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with library computer applications such as a library management system desirable
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
