Position Overview

The College of Education (COE) at Butler University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure track faculty position with a preferred start date of January 2024. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, motivated, and collaborative faculty member who will recruit and teach undergraduate students; help to develop and sustain a Kinesiology lab, liaise with Athletics and College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and set a vision for and provide leadership to the new Kinesiology undergraduate major. Students in the Kinesiology major may choose to add concentrations in Pre-professional Studies, Applied Human Performance, and/or Sport Coaching. Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.

  • Provide flexible and creative leadership to the Kinesiology major: recruit and advise students; set a vision and goals for the program and new Kinesiology lab; and leverage the sports, wellness, and athletics resources at Butler University and throughout the Indianapolis metropolitan area.
  • Teach on campus courses each semester. Teaching load may include classes in the Kinesiology major (for example, Prevention and Treatment of Injuries, Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Activity, Sport, and Exercise, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Strength and Conditioning Training), the Sport Coaching minor, and the Butler University core curriculum.
  • Engage in scholarship aligned with COE expectations for positive progress toward tenure
  • Provide service to the College, University, and professional community
  • Contribute to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population
Required qualification

This is a tenure track position and an earned doctorate from an accredited university in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Sport Science, or Health Sciences or a related discipline with evidence of specialized training in athletic training is required.

Preferred qualifications

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
  • Evidence of sustained commitment and action towards diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings
  • Demonstrated commitment to interrupting and eliminating inequitable outcomes, removing barriers, and creating inclusive conditions for individuals and communities regardless of any predictive identities
  • Specialized certifications such as Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Certified Athletic Trainer, and/or Certified Mental Performance Coach
  • Interest and experience in responsive, human centered, and experiential education; creativity in imagining and manifesting innovative, future-oriented education
  • Experience working with students from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Ability to support learners from a variety of backgrounds with strong, student-centered, inclusive instructional methods
  • Experience or potential to develop and lead a Kinesiology lab and human performance facility for experiential learning, research, and future community-based programming
  • Proven success or potential for success in scholarship that is commensurate with the expectations within a "teacher-scholar" model
  • Alignment with the COE Shared Commitments and the mission of Butler University
