Laboratory Manager
About the Opportunity
Summary and Responsibilities:
The Lab Manager will be responsible for managing the operational, instructional, and administrative activities in large departmental laboratory teaching programs, serving both undergraduate and graduate students. This position reports to the Department Chair, and will also work with other departmental staff to place and receive orders for the teaching labs, maintain and oversee repair of equipment, and ensure safety compliance of all individuals utilizing the departmental labs. The Lab Manager will supervise, monitor, and evaluate Stipend Graduate Assistants (SGAs) assigned to teach the lab sections and will provide general supervision and guidance to Part-Time Lecturers (PTLs) related to the design, modification and progress of laboratory courses. The Lab Manager will work with other departmental staff to advise, supervise, and guide all undergraduate students in lab-related matters. The Lab Manager will be expected to work closely with faculty members, advisors, and other student service offices to address the individual needs of all students and facilitate student success. The Lab Manager will serve as primary point of contact for all teaching-lab-related issues, including mediation and resolution of problems, as needed. The Lab Manager will prepare and provide all materials required for successful completion of labs. The Lab Manager will develop, manage, and provide instructional support to all students. The Lab Manager will assist in student recruiting by giving brief, informational tours of the teaching labs to prospective and accepted students and their parents. The Lab Manager will coordinate all aspects of daily operations, including meetings with teaching assistants and PTLs; scheduling undergraduate assistants; placement, receipt, and cataloging of orders; and determination of equipment purchase priorities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred. Degree in the biological sciences or a closely related field required. Working knowledge of biological, biochemical and health science related equipment, laboratory experiments and procedures is essential. Minimum of 2-3 years laboratory experience in an academic setting with supervisory responsibilities required. Knowledge of OSHA, EPA and DOT Safety Regulations and biohazardous materials handling procedures is necessary. Teaching experience, 2-3 years in an academic setting desired, combined experience of teaching laboratories and lectures preferred.
