Assistant Director for Programming and Inclusion (Student Services Professional 2 – MR09 )

The Assistant Director for Programming and Inclusion is primarily responsible for supporting and programming for LGBTQ+ students and allies. To that end, the Assistant Director will develop new programming, coordinate education efforts, and provide services on campus dealing specifically with sexual orientation, gender identity, intersectionality, and diversity and inclusion. The position’s focus will be on developing new ways to serve LGBTQ+ students and providing programming to the larger campus community related to LGBTQ+ issues and diversity and inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities

Programs and Services

Develop new programs and initiatives to serve LGBTQ+ students and their allies by determining gaps in services and existing programming needs; in collaboration with the Associate Director, coordinate with the WaGE leadership board (CASE Board) members especially the Queer Education Chair; assist the Director and Associate Director in creating and implementing initiatives related to awareness regarding LGBTQ+ issues, intersectionality, and diversity and inclusion with the goal of student recruitment, retention, and academic success; coordinate and implement LGBTQ+ new and existing educational programs with the input and advice of the Director and Associate Director; coordinate the Safe Zone Aspiring Ally program including developing, scheduling, and facilitating workshops; assist the Director and Associate Director in creating campus initiatives to raise awareness about gender-based violence and sex discrimination (with a focus on LGBTQ+ survivors) and implementing these initiatives; advise Spectrum student organization and provide support to other student organizations who seek education related to LGBTQ+ issues; and with the support and guidance of the WaGE Associate Director, assess programs to meet the needs of the division and center and align with CAS standards, EMSA student learning outcomes, and the strategic plan.

Student Support and Advocacy

Assist in providing information, confidential advocacy, referral and other direct services to Center's clientele who have been victims of sexual and relationship violence and sex discrimination; analyze student situations and identify areas of concern and problems, referring students to appropriate resources to resolve problems outside the area of expertise; support students, faculty, and staff in advocating for compliance with applicable laws, policies and procedures especially Title IX, Clery Act, Title VII, SMRVS policy and other relevant laws, policies, and procedures; counsel, advise, coach, and serve as an advocate for students in area of expertise within student services; and provide advocacy to LBGTQ+ students I accessing campus housing, aligning campus policies with Title IX guidance to insure compliance, and supporting students who have been victims of discrimination based upon gender identity and sexual orientation.

Communications and Marketing

Maintain LGBTQ+ focused portions of the Center's website including LGBTQ+ services and Safe Zone; other technical responsibilities including social media, listserv, and other databases; and develope and create marketing materials for the Center to raise awareness of diversity and inclusion especially issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Community Outreach

Assist the Director in developing a community of students, faculty, and staff to support the initiative and mission of the Center including developing faculty and staff LGBTQ+ group; and assist the Director in creating community partnerships to better serve the campus and Chattanooga community including continuing partnerships with Chattanooga Pride, Unum, Nooga Diversity Center and others.

Operation Support

Assist the Director in supervising an Administrative Assistant and Work Study students; and assist the staff of the center to ensure the space is kept clean and organized.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of issues relating to gender, feminism, power-based violence, sexual orientation, gender identity, LGBTQ+, intersectionality, race and ethnicity and other diversity theory
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Computer skills with experience in work processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
  • Ability to work effectively within the higher education system
  • Ability to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Ability to organize and coordinate events
  • Ability to work varied hours based on the night and weekend programs
  • Ability to manage sensitive issues
  • Ability to think critically and make sound decisions

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies, Student Affairs, Higher Education or closely related field; and one to three years of work-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Women’s Studies, Student Affairs, Higher Education or closely related field; and web design skills.
