Assistant Professor of Platform Studies

We invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in critical approaches to platform studies. We are especially interested in research that examines platforms in any of the following contexts: feminism and gender, globalization, queer theory, critical race theory, and labor studies. Specialties may include app culture, algorithm auditing, the history of platforms, software studies, social media entertainment, or other areas of platform studies. We seek a scholar-teacher who examines digital platforms in terms of the architecture of their technical systems, as well as the cultural, institutional and regulatory arrangements that surround them.

The University and Department value interdisciplinary work. We are particularly interested in candidates who can strengthen interdisciplinary connections with other units across the University of Iowa. The successful candidate will join a vibrant intellectual community with faculty from diverse research backgrounds, including three main departmental areas: (1) interpersonal communication and relationships, (2) media history and culture, and (3) rhetoric, culture, engagement. Thus, the successful candidate should have an appreciation for working alongside colleagues from both humanistic and social scientific perspectives.
