Title: Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities

Position Purpose:

The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities will utilize the fundamentals of evidence-based best practices and research to enhance the student experience by overseeing all aspects of large scale, late night and weekend social programs that engage a diverse student body with eclectic interests and ideas. This includes overseeing large scale events such as concerts, dances, Winter Carnival, Lost Valley Takeover, Senior Week, festivals, and the Village Club Series (VCS), a weekly series that offers performances from a wide-range of range of artists, in a coffee house style setting.

The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities will directly oversee the Campus Activities and Traditions (CAT) student programming board and the Village Club Series (VCS) student staff, providing mentorship and leadership in coordinating robust social experiences designed to build
community on campus.

The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities manages resources to support late night and weekend social events and activities. This includes co-supervising the BCSG Funding & Activities
Board for event coordination and training of Funding & Activities Advisors, managing multiple budgets, and developing and maintaining an assessment plan that informs how the Office of Campus Life supports the student social experience.

The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities will also support student clubs and organizations, and student programs. This includes supporting Orientation Week Leader (OWL events)
and orientation programs as needed, Senior Week and other related programming, and 21+ programming. This includes providing logistical and staffing assistance with late night and/or weekend events such as club showcases, cultural programs and dances, musical performances, and general advising, etc.

The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities will also work collaboratively with the Campus Life team and other campus partners to provide Bates Leads student leadership programs throughout the academic year. All programs, social events, and activities should reflect a commitment to racial equity, accessibility, and social justice.

The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Activities will serve as a Student Support Advisor for a cohort of approximately 100 students. This entails providing support for students with personal concerns, supplemental academic advising, and general assistance in navigating resources on campus. Due to the nature of this important role, this position is live-on, with on-campus housing accommodations provided. The Coordinator of Campus Life Programming and Student Activities will
have a flexible work schedule to accommodate working many nights and weekends throughout the academic year.

Job Duties:
  • Oversees funding resources that provide strategic and robust late night programming opportunities on nights and weekends.
  • Plans, implements, and supports late-night social activities and traditions. This includes overseeing Campus Activities and Traditions (CAT) (Bates’ student-led programming board), Campus Life professional event staff, and student staff that support student activities such as concerts, dances, 21+ events, the Village Club Series (VCS), Senior Week, Orientation Week Leader (OWL) events/programs, and other late-night activities and initiatives.
  • Works closely with other Campus Life staff on developing new and inclusive programming initiatives that appeal to a diverse student population. This includes First-Year Experience and new student orientation programming in collaboration with the Assistant Director for First-Year Experience and Campus Life.
  • Leverages the Bates Engage student engagement platform, based on Campus Groups, to maximize the student experience and enhance office efficiency.
  • Advises and supports student clubs and organizations with event planning and logistics.
  • Assists the Campus Life team with efforts to establish clear outcomes associated with programming and developing methods of assessment.
  • Holds both traditional and non-traditional office hours (after 5:00 pm and weekends when needed) to meet with interested campus stakeholders and students.
  • Collaborates with student staff and campus partners to build strong communities that celebrate difference and support all students in their academic and personal success at Bates.
  • Provide appropriate guidance to students on issues related to College policies and procedures, contract negotiation and management, including risk management.
  • Other Campus Life duties as assigned.
Office Support
  • Foster an open, welcoming, and fun office environment for students, families, and colleagues.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for visitors to the office and engage in appropriate triage process for walk-in inquiries.
  • Serve as the primary responder to email and phone inquiries for Campus Life events and programs.
  • Provide up-to-date, timely information utilizing social media and other resources to publicize student events.
  • Assists with managing the Campus Life email and responding to inquiries.
  • Assists with managing the Campus Life credit cards, including reconciling receipts for student club and organization purchases.
  • Assists with triaging student club space requests that are submitted via Bates Engage and the Event Management System (EMS).
    Serves as the primary manager of Bates Today, the daily electronic newsletter that curates campus-side student-facing information.
  • Serves as one of the primary approvers of class year listservs.
  • Reserve spaces for Campus Life initiatives.
  • Provide logistical and programming support for Senior Associate Dean of Students and Assistant Dean of Students for Campus Life & Student Leadership.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience
  • 1+ years of experience in a Professional higher educational setting where student supervision and/or collaboration integral to the position.
  • Experience managing extracurricular and co-curricular college programs and events required.
  • Student leadership, student activities, and/or residence life experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting students from minoritized groups, including students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation-to-college students, and low-income students.
  • Ability to design, implement, and support late night and weekend programming that would appeal to an eclectic group of Bates’ student
    population.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal & listening) skills.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal situations and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills for successful documentation, planning and execution.
  • Ability to engage in mediation and restorative justice practices.
  • Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel, Power Point, WordPress
    [website], Google docs, email and calendaring.)
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional software as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work most nights and weekends during the academic year to support student events and programs and other non- traditional schedules.
