Summary/Objective
The Administrative Assistant (AA) assists the Program Coordinator (PC) with all Program work. This position supports the evening administrative agenda of the Legal Rhetoric: Writing and Research Program, which services approximately 430 students annually. Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the incumbent assists in the implementation of administrative systems necessary for this program, interacts with students, faculty and administrators, and works to insure the smooth operation of the program.
Besides providing assistance to the Program Coordinator, the incumbent provides support services for six full-time Instructors, 15 adjunct professors, approximately 40 Dean’s Fellows, scheduling, classes, study groups, and document and curriculum production and dissemination for 30+ sections of Legal Rhetoric.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Part-Time, 27 hours/week.
- Non-exempt.
- Required hours are 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; the remaining hours may be arranged as mutually convenient and may include Friday. Weekend hours are not available.
- Bachelor's degree.
- 2-4 years of relevant experience.
- At least 2 years of office experience.
- Must have strong written and oral communications, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills.
- Must be able to work with diverse constituencies and be creative and flexible in solving problems.
- Must be able to work well under pressure, handle multiple activities, and respond to time constraints.
- Must possess mature judgement, have a professional attitude, and manage conflict tactfully and decisively.
- Must be experienced with MS Office Suite, specifically Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, and Excel.
- Must be able to conduct Internet research and operate eFax, a copy machine and scanner.
- This position requires excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.
- Must be extremely attentive to detail, familiar with the preparation of standard office documents, such as letters and reports.
- Other technical skills that are helpful include: utilizing programs such as EMS (Event Management Software), Easy Grade Pro, and SeatGen, as well as accessing websites such as Westlaw/TWEN.

- Employees in staff positions at American University must deliver their services to the university from either the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, or perform work on-site at the university.
