Responsibilities

Teaching, Assessment and Curriculum Materials Development

  1. Teaching
  • Contribute to teaching on a range of graduate student-oriented EAP courses and modules, including IEFP (summer), EPM, EAP short courses and workshops, etc.
  • Be able to plan and deliver engaging EAP lessons in a variety of teaching modes (classroom, online or blended learning), as required
  • Plan and prepare lessons to meet learning outcomes indicated in the syllabus
  • Teach EAP while governed by the syllabus and students’ needs
  • Conduct scheduled individual or small group coaching to EAP-enrolled graduate students on a regular basis
  • Provide appointment-based EAP-related consultations to graduate student across the School
  • Be familiar with and flexibly use provided teaching materials for an EAP course or module; occasionally create and share supplementary materials with the team to support the course or module
  • Take on other English teaching duties within the School, as assigned by the Director
  • Take on other classroom teaching duties within the Graduate School, as necessary

      2. Assessment

  • Provide timely and high-quality developmental feedback to graduate students
  • Provide student progress reports to the Director and contribute to EAP pass/not pass decisions regarding EAP-enrolled students, as required
  • Be familiar with Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) global descriptors relating to language proficiency levels, and the CEFR-based Global Scale of English (GSE) learning outcomes
  • Lead on conducting the English Language Proficiency interviews (ELP) during the Admissions cycle; training, observation and/or coaching will be provided as necessary
  • Contribute to the design and writing of summative assessments for EAP courses and modules, if required
  • Assist in the implementation of summative assessments for EAP courses and modules (including standardization, proctoring and grading), if required

      3. Curriculum Materials Development

  • Contribute to the development of existing EAP courses and modules; identify and propose areas for improvement to ensure courses and modules continue to student-focused, innovative, of high quality and are based on up-to-date and relevant research and scholarship in EAP
  • Work independently or collaboratively (as directed) to produce new materials for use in an EAP course or module, including new EAP courses or modules
  • Contribute to the development of Public Education curriculum with English as focus, as necessary
  • Be confident in using web or IT tools to design and implement materials to enhance graduate students’ self-directed learning or classroom learning experiences

Coordination and Supervision

  • Be the point of contact for ACESS Center student workers
  • Assist the Director in scheduling student workers during the academic year

Non-Teaching Duties

  • Undertake all mandatory and advised training and development, as required
  • Be open to formative classroom observation and appraisal from the Director Attend regular teacher meetings
  • Other duties relevant to the post, which may be assigned by the Director

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Ability to communicate accurately and fluently at a very high level of spoken and written English
  • Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or other relevant area
  • Recognized English teaching certificate e.g., Cambridge CELTA or Trinity CerTESOL
  • Experience of teaching and assessing EAP (this excludes experience only with IELTS or TOEFL preparation)
  • Experience of planning and delivering engaging EAP lessons
  • Ability to teach EAP students with varying English levels, of different nationalities and backgrounds
  • Awareness of, and commitment to, inclusive practices in the classroom
  • Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team

Preferred

  • Familiarity with CEFR and GSE
  • Experience of developing EAP curriculum and assessments
  • Experience of teaching EAP online using online video conferencing platforms e.g., Microsoft Teams, as from time to time we offer online only programs (e.g., IEFP)
  • Familiarity with teaching EAP to Chinese university students
  • Experience of teaching on a Chinese university EAP program
