Job Summary/Basic Function
Central State University is going to establish a Math Learning Center ( MLC ) housed in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science ( MCS ). MLC will be supported through a US Department of Education Grant. MLC mainly offers computer-assisted remediation for freshman-level math students based on their needs identified through a standardized placement test developed by the CSU math faculty. This Center will also support tutoring services as well as facilitate homework and study groups for students enrolled in mathematics courses. While primarily focused on freshman-level math, the center is open to all students taking math courses such as Trigonometry, Calculus series, Numerical Methods and Linear Algebra.
Math Learning Center Coordinator ( MLCC ) supports establishing and managing the day-to-day operations of MLC . The MLCC position will be a 12-month full-time position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Specific duties of MLCC include, but not limited, to the following:
• Support to establish the Math Learning Center.
• Develop training materials for student tutors and faculty in consultation with the Project Director(s) and the Department Chair
• Hire and provide appropriate training for student tutors with the collaboration and supervision of the Project Director(s)
• Schedule and supervise the student math tutors in MLC and keep accurate records of their weekly hours of work
• Facilitate supplemental instruction activities for students enrolled in College Algebra with the assistance of student teaching assistants (tutors)
• Maintain a log of student attendance and progress
• Help participants develop invaluable study and time-management skills along with content knowledge
• Act as a liaison between course instructors and students
• Advertise and facilitate the Math Learning Center events
• Organize and present workshops and exam review sessions as needed
• Prepare utilization and other reports of the Math Learning Center
• Coordinate monthly and quarterly reports as necessary.
• Help on other activities related to the project
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics ( STEM ) area
• Have outstanding coordination, records management, and communication skills
• Sensitivity to academic and cultural diversity
• Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with CSU community
• Willingness to work on online or remote setup
Preferred Qualifications
• One or more years of teaching experience in an institute of higher learning
• Experience with learning management systems such as Schoology
• Experience on supervising and managing tutoring workforce
• Master’s degree in STEM or a related area
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and be able to lift 10 pounds or more.
