Job Description
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences ( CAS ), the Assistant Dean is responsible for the academic wellbeing and monitoring academic progress and success of CAS students (those beyond freshman year) through degree completion, and assist the Dean on various tasks pertaining to the operation of the CAS .
Duties & Responsibilities
Duties include but not limited to
• Approve student forms (including but not limited to Pass/Fail requests, Course substitution requests for CORE, Undergraduate approval for graduate course registration, Retroactive Petition for changes to registration, Request to take undergraduate courses at another institution, Undergraduate overload applications, Closed course admittance form, Special registration requests (overrides))
• Advise students in the composite majors, handle all special cases to meet degree completion (student on academic probation and/or recently suspended, student with conduct issues and completion agreements, students in need of special arrangements due to medical or personal issues)
• Handle grade grievances, academic dishonesty, course and faculty concerns
• Review degree audits, communicate about missing requirements, work with students on plans for degree completion on a case by case basis
• Collaborate with faculty, CASE, CEEL and the Registrar’s Office on graduation matters
• Approve students for participation in commencement when they have 6 or fewer credits remaining
• Represent CAS in different committees when CAS Dean is not available or has time conflicts
• Manage special projects related to strategic plan
• Conduct and/or oversee required assessment activities, including the development of annual implementation report that documents how assessment finds were used to improve programs or services in CAS
• Manage student advising programs and initiatives for CAS undergraduate and graduate students
• Other duties as assigned
The Assistant Dean further assists the Dean on
• Reviewing institutional research data to make decisions for program development, resource allocation, development of programs to increase student persistence and graduate rates
• Conducting regular CAS Chairs and Program Directors meeting
• Reviewing semester schedules for all CAS departments
• Evaluating courses for cancellation
• Meeting with faculty to discuss scheduling strategies
• Evaluating courses for cancellation
• Enforcing and develop academic policies related to CAS undergraduate and graduate students.
• Developing curricula and research tracks
• Administering CAS budget
• Conducting faculty recruitment and development activities
Qualification Standards
Preferred qualification: A successful candidate
• has extensive student advising experience
• is familiar with university policies and various management systems
• has a track-record of successfully working with various constituents in a university setting
• possesses active listening skills and exceptional communication skills
• is discreet with information
• is proficient in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite
• possesses superior organization skills and dedication to completing projects in a timely manner and under pressure
• is detail oriented and comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment
• possesses knowledge of datatel system
• is proficient in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite
• is willing to learn new techniques
• is creative and takes initiatives
Education
A minimum of Master’s Degree and a Doctoral Degree in a relevant area of study in CAS is preferred
