Lab Technician II
Department: Dean of Science and Engineering

Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

The Laboratory Technician II position supports and maintains the STEM laboratories in Wellesley Hills under the supervision of the Lab Manager in accordance with college policies and procedures. This position will need to work on weekends and evenings as needed.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Set up STEM laboratory experiments preparing chemical solutions, buffers, and biological cultures following appropriate lab safety protocols as required;
- Provide support to teaching faculty and students when required;
- Maintain general order in the STEM labs as well as cleanliness and safety of laboratory spaces and perform related duties including but not limited to light custodial duties, sterilization of equipment and glassware, washing of glassware, and identification and removal of hazardous waste removal as needed following applicable safety standards;
- Read and maintain a log of temperatures and pressures of key equipment in all STEM labs and promptly notify appropriate staff of any problems and needs;
- Assist in preparing and filing lab safety incident reports and updating related databases including but not limited to STEM lab inventory, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and equipment surplus records;
- Carry out weekend and evening duties as assigned;
- Participate in assigned trainings as needed;
- Perform administrative tasks associated with department activities including picking up materials from local stores, receiving supplies and materials, assessing inventory and communicating needs, identifying storage and storing/restocking routine supplies, printing and picking up printed materials, and communicating with faculty, staff, and vendors as needed; and
- Carry out other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in medical technology chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
II. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
III. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course, or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
IV. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience.

- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related discipline;
- Knowledge of and the ability to operate a wide variety of standard lab equipment; and
- Computer proficiency.
Salary Range: AFSCME Unit I Grade 17 Step 1 $52,906.62 annually. Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1 of the range.
