About the Department

Graphic and Experience Design (GXD) is positioned in the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design (ID), along with the ID undergraduate and graduate programs, within the College of Design. The College of Design additionally offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate study in architecture and media arts; graduate study in landscape architecture and environmental planning; and doctoral study in design. The College of Design employs a selective admissions process, and entering students consistently rank at the top of academic achievement at NC State University, while the College of Design graduation rate is consistently the highest or among the highest at NC State.

GXD faculty meet to coordinate curricula and events, and GXD and ID faculty meet together for departmental coordination.

The Bachelor of Graphic and Experience Design (BGXD) and Master of Graphic and Experience Design (MGXD) programs blend user experience and user interface design (UX/UI) with graphic design practices like branding, typography, and service design. Students create interfaces, digital products, brands, and environments that are embedded in larger experiences. Students learn human-centered research methods to ensure that these experiences focus on user needs and desires, thus empowering the people who interact with interfaces. Alumni are designers in software companies and leading design firms including IBM, Red Hat, SAS, Lenovo, Citrix, IQVIA, Pentagram, IDEO, Willowtree, and R/GA. Recent MGXD graduates are also faculty at major research universities including Virginia Tech, University of Arkansas, The Ohio State University, University of Illinois, University of Florida, and Boise State.
