The Role
Johnson C. Smith invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Athletics. Reporting to the President, the Director of Athletics plans, administers, and directs intercollegiate athletic activities for the University’s NCAA DII athletics program. The Director is responsible for the development, management, coordination and supervision of an intercollegiate athletics program with 15 programs and more than 225 student-athletes.
The Director of Athletics assures that all programs, coaches, staff, and student-athletes comply with the policies, rules, and regulations of the University, the NCAA, and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Director is also responsible for oversight of the athletic department budget and is directly involved with fundraising for the athletics program. Qualifications
Requires a Master’s degree and proven coaching, fundraising, administrative, and financial skills with 5- 7 years of progressive experience leading a successful, multifaceted enterprise, preferably in NCAA college athletics. Must possess a broad understanding and firm commitment to NCAA, CIAA, and University policies, rules and regulations. Must demonstrate strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and NCAA Portal. Record of achievement in college athletics administration. Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and use good judgment in scope of authority is also required. The equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
An individual in this position is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and will, at times, be exposed to outdoor work in inclement and/or hot weather and seasonally be required to work extended days and weekends. There is considerable travel and frequent night and weekend work is involved.
