Job Description

NPR-affiliate KBIA and the Missouri School of Journalism are looking for the right candidate to lead our dynamic public radio station’s news team and train the next generation of audio journalists.

The station and school are located at the University of Missouri-Columbia. We are seeking applications for a candidate who is excited about the prospect of reimagining what a public radio news team can accomplish and who is ready to lead collaborative projects with partner School of Journalism newsrooms producing professional-quality work across platforms.

Our news director will also serve as a faculty member at the Missouri School of Journalism, leading operations for our Edward R. Murrow national award–winning radio station that is also a working laboratory for students at The Missouri School of Journalism.

The director will oversee planning, supervising and production of news programming for radio broadcasts, including in-depth and long form reports, as well as public affairs programming. Responsibilities also include classroom teaching, faculty committee assignments and service to the profession of radio journalism.

KBIA is part of a group of news outlets operated by the School of Journalism, including the Columbia Missourian, a community newspaper; KOMU-TV, an NBC affiliate; Vox Magazine and Missouri Business Alert. KBIA is located in a centralized newsroom with these outlets, and the news director will embrace the opportunity of working across platforms to create unique content.

Responsibilities also include developing and maintaining contacts with community leaders in the coordination and implementation of news and public affairs programming across digital and on-air platforms; planning and producing promotional announcements for upcoming news and public affairs reports; and training Missouri School of Journalism students, including classroom teaching.

The position carries an academic rank of Assistant Professional Practice (non-tenure track).

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree is required. Two to three years of experience in public radio news broadcasting, interviewing and production are necessary.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Anticipated Hiring Range: $65,000-$73,660
