The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York and an internationally renowned college of art, design, business and technology with a strong emphasis on liberal arts, invites nominations and applications for a Part-Time Classroom Assistant in the Science & Math Department. 

Job Description:

The primary responsibility of the Classroom Assistant, in the School of Liberal Arts, is to supervise students in the science laboratory setting under the supervision of the course instructor. Duties include but are not imited to the following: working with individual and groups of students as they practice required skills; develop/demonstrate skills; make and adjust assistance to meet student learning needs, and consults with the course instructor for any student deficiencies. The Classroom Assistant will participate and offer recommendations in team and department meetings.

Essential Functions:

  • Supplement, assist and support instructor in studio focused classes in their preparation and teaching of course work utilizing specialized subject matter and instructional methods.
  • Guide and interact with student's training/instructing them in the use and function of spectrometers and other laboratory equipment.
  • Classroom and experiment set up.
  • Basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist students during scheduled lab time.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in the sciences; master's degree preferred.
  • A valid New York State Teacher's Certificate.
  • Experience teaching in a laboratory environment or science classroom. 
  • Knowledge of spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR etc.) required.
  • Chemical safety knowledge (C14) required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge and experience working with and analyzing biological, chemical and physical materials.
  • Strong technology skills (including Google Suite and MS Office programs).
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks.

Additional Information:

Review of applications will begin immediately until the position is filled. Successful completion of a background check is required for appointment to this position once an offer has been made.

The hourly rate for this position is $48.13 per Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Salary Schedule 85. 

Work Schedule

Days/Hours: M-F, 9am-5pm, in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
